Had an old Canon Powershot A80 - 4 megapixel, yes that old!

Too many scout outings and offroad trips banging around the truck and packs and it's given up the ghost.

Looking to spend around $200. Borrowed a buddy's Canon SX100 (current model SX110 IS - $230) for summer camp an took a couple hundred pics - all turned out very well. Loved the 3" LCD display for my aging eyes. I can't see shiat up close w/o reading glasses so either a view finder or a large LCD are a must. Only thing I didn't know about the camera was that the flash did not pop up automatically. You had to raise it if you thought the pic needed a flash so it's not a dummy point and shoot because of that feature alone. I liked the 10x zoom also.

Anything to compare in this price range to this model Canon you've used, heard about, recommend? I've got time since my next outing isn't until 8.7.09.

If the flash didn't pop up, it may be because it detected enough light on the autoflash setting.

We bought a Canon a1000 IS for the missus's dad on Christmas.
He loves it. I think it was a pretty easy transition as he had the camera that you currently have. It's a point and shoot, but it's 10 mega pix, and isn't necessarily small enough to just slip into the pocket and go, but is small enough that if you had to, you could. Her dad's an older gentle man, and he loves the 2.5" LCD screen. Menu is very easy to navigate and it does great landscape and macro pictures.

I have a pentax w30 that i absolutely love. Why? It's dust proof and water proof (not really proof, but proof enough). I bought it when serving overseas, because my first one took a dump in one of those biblical sandstorms. My only gripe is that I sat on it, so a quarter inch of the screen is blurred vertically. No big deal though. The lens is fixed, so there's less "moving" parts, and i've dropped it plenty of times, had it in water for hours at a time, and it's still doing great for me. It's not what I'd expect for $270, but AAFES steals pretty much whatever they can from you.

Take a look at the A1000IS or the A2000IS which has the 3" screen. I'm not sure what other difference it has, since both are 10mp, but there's about a 30 dollar difference at walmart, both are under your 200 price goal.

Good Luck!

ah, cameras on my mind now too. Presently in the mood for a semi-pro level Nikon DSLR. Gotta use all my old lenses for something....

(not to mention I'll likely will make room in our regular Digital cameras supply bin... hint hint... :D)

I was checking out the Canon SX110, SX10 and the Nikon D40

I went here for info.

KenRockwell.com

With a sale going on I bought the Nikon D40. It is bigger than the Canons mentioned, but it is an SLR and not point and shoot. It also does not have the huge magnification of the SX110 and SX10.

If I was going to go for the 250 dollar range, I would do that for sure. But I really am digging the D40.

If the flash didn't pop up, it may be because it detected enough light on the autoflash setting.

Reviews and guy I borrowed the camera from both say it's a manual pop up when you think a flash is needed, much like attaching a flash on a full fledged SLR.

I'll take a look at the a1000is. Thx.

Just finished looking at the A1000is/A2000is and the even newer A2100is. Looks like the only major difference between the 2000 and 2100 is 10.0mp vs 12.1. Hell, I've been happy with the old 4mp for years. The 2100 isn't worth $40 more. The A2000IS is exactly what I'm looking for.
