Hello,
I am looking for a motor for my FJ. I hear that a F engine will be the easiest option. But a 2F will give me more power??? Will I need to upgrade to a 4 sp. trans. if I go for the 2F? What else will i need to consider IF i go for the 2F???

Anyone have a motor for me?
The FJ has been gone through with frame off... and looks beautiful, looking for a motor to go w. it! :steer:
thanks,
ian

Depending on what month your rig was built in 73 it will either have the F motor (oil filter on drivers side) or the F.5 motor (oil filter on passenger side).

If you want to try and retain some collector value for the vehicle you will want to ideally rebuild the engine that is in it, assuming it is original so the VIN numbers match. If you don't care about keeping it original then go with a 2F since it is 4.2L versus 3.9L and has better oiling, a little more HP, etc. The F, F.5 or 2F will all work fine whether you keep the 3 spd or upgrade to the 4 spd as long as you use the correct flywheel setup.

And I'm driving from Denver to LA first week of September, so you would even have a possible option for shipping.

If you are contemplating a change, then a 2F will be more satisfactory. Since you are pre-smog, you can desmog the motor which will simplify it considerably.

The FJ60 deal offered here is something to consider. It comes with the desirable FJ60 ignition which has a much better distributor. Make sure you get the coil.ignitor and airclearner with it.

The only issue with the FJ60 stuff is that the bellhousing will not have the threaded holes that bolt up the rear motor mounts, so you will have to fab up a crossmember. I think if I was in your position, I would use an FJ60 4 speed and split case as well. That way the tranny will have a mount for the cross member in the casting. It will simplify things and get you a stronger t-case as well.

Good luck, that's a nice looking 40. Mudrak in Sonoma may be able to help you with some of the needed parts.
