Looking to add some horsepower on my FJ...Because I have lifted and added the extra weight with bigger tires, she seems a little under power..I heard of the supercharger a little too much..Just looking for advice in what Exhaust system is the best and affordable, also looking to add a cool intake...Can Anyone help me as far as what is the best exhaust system outthere, your help would be appriciated..

exhaust

I've got the TRD exhaust. I don't know if it really boosted power much, but it sure sounds better than the original.

I also went with the TRD exhaust, then addad JLA ceramic coated headers and the TRD cold air intake.....
Peppy and Throaty!!!

I added a magnaflow muffler, re-routed the exhaust for better clearance and added the TRD CAI (w/ dealer coupon, it was least expensive) and have noticed better throttle response and slight improvement in mpg. Have not tested it off road yet, that's next. However, w/ larger tires, the only thing that will equalize that is steeper gearing. What size tires are you runnning?

I'm running 33'' toyo's ...I'm going to purchase TRD Exhaust today...Most likely purchase a cold intake...But with that help as far as Horse power..?

TRD exhaust will do nothing for an increase in power, the CAI "might". Real bolt on HP gains are hard to come by, at least those with dyno results to back up claims. I can see how some nice headers and a complete exhaust overhaul with CAI would change the HP/torque curve but just the TRD exhaust wil only guve it a little better sound...

An exhaust system isn't going to do much of anything, nor is an intake system. A good set of headers probably would help a little. If you really want to do something that would you feel a difference, take the heads off and have them ported. Then port match the intake manifold, and headers.

WOW I wish I knew what that means..lol any pics on how to?..lol

Yes it will make a difference. I not sure how much without a dyno reading. My last car I had made 220 hp to the wheels. With a Magnaflow exhaust only the engine produced 233hp to the wheels. I think I made 21 pounds more of torque too. When I added The CAI I gained Some more. But I dont know the difference from the TDR to the stock exhaust. I think Its just the muffler is lest restricted. If you want more hp you should add a suppercharger.

tbh i think port and polish jobs are deceptve, the intake ports should be left rough, depending on how smooth they are i might even consider gouging them, as this would create tubulance and improove the fuel/air mixture. additionally, increasing the port size reduces intake and/or exhaust pressure, hence rate of flow. you want a certain degree of backpressure to maintain compression and unless you plan do do serious forced induction porting and polishing a motor can result in HP/Tq LOSS. however in my TOTALLY UNPERFESSIONAL AMETURE opinion i think that thats getting a little carried away for a 4x4. perhaps if i had a lotus elise....

in reply to the OP i'd suggest straightpiping the exhaust and if us live in a state without emissions testing remove a couple of cats and remove the resonators. if you do have emissions removing the resonators is still viable, as mentioned headers and a full exh. is prolly your best bet for bolt on gains. also as mentioned you'll prolly be dissapointed with just taht though, it will probably be hardly noticable, save for the sound.

I like My TRD exhaust and drop in filter on my FJC. They seem to make a nice differance to me, especially the exhaust tone. I’d like to get some headers some day, but they are not going to be bolt on because the stock headers are welded into the down pipes which are welded to the cat’s. They will have to be cut off, and the new one's welded back on.

I've always found, that an exhaust system, or an intake system alone doesn't do much by it's self. But, depending on the car, if you get both and they work well together, you can see a 5-10% increase in peak HP; even more with a good port and polish.

However, there is a downside, in that you'll loose at least some low end power/torque and sometimes a lot of it depending on the setup. In a 4x4 you typically want to keep your low end power, and that’s what FJTex was talking about with lowering the rate of flow; which is true for a low RPM vehicle, especially if you want it to make lots of toque at low RPMs. High RPM vehicles, however, need the smother/easier flow so they can wrap up fast to hit peak power fast (at high RPM’s).

In other words, port and polish’s are good for high revving engines, but not for lots of low end torque like the FJC has.

The real key is to improve "efficiency", not necessarily power, with intakes and exhausts; which usually means allowing it to be louder (i.e. remove the resonators). One of the things car manufactures have to consider is the noise tolerance of their target market (not to mention the law), so usually they make them really quiet at the expense of efficiency.

So the real key is finding an exhaust system that is better tuned to your engine, not just more open and free flowing.
