Hi all-

It's sighing time again...

The 85 FJ60 flunked inspection (MA) for many dumb things but one of them was exhaust leaks. My friend who's a mechanic (Volvos, but still a mechanic) found cracks in the exhaust manifold and cat. He's suggesting that they get ripped out along with all the smog stuff and replaced with an "older style" manifold and generic cat. What do you think of this plan? Do we think a simplified system will be able to pass emissions? Am I right in believing MA has a 25 year rolling emissions exemption?

Thats a good question on the exemption part..., I have never seen anything in writing from the RMV other than 1983 and back. It doesn't say anything about vehicles 25 years and older, but next year will be the first year that 1983 is older than 25. The US imports 25 and older as exempt so I am not sure how MA could hold to the 1983 thing after this year.

I am not sure a full simplified system will pass the emission test. I personally have had good luck in the past with a header and generic cat, but leaving the other stuff in place...was yours close to passing emissions or did it fail miserably?

I have an early fj60 intake and exhaust if you need it. All the smog stuff as well.

Yours for a 6 pack.

Ever get up to VT? Shipping might be a pain. It is pretty heavy.

Please look this up on the rmv web site, but the gist of the law is car or SUV or light truck older than 1983 is exempt. The rolling 25 year rule was removed several years ago.

Look into the actual amount of money you need to spend to replace the emissions. There are limits the RMV requires you to spend to attempt to pass inspection. I believe the older the car, the lower the dollar amount. Again, don't quote me, but I believe this info is posted at the rmv web site.

Good luck.

In October, the emissions law is apparently being changed so that only OBDII and newer vehicles must pass. If this is true, then you only have to wait a couple months.

Thats good news JJS, where did you see this info? I figured the state would have to do something as next year 1983 will be 26 years old...

I've heard it from various people. A couple of them actually do inspections. I think the state is even going to compensate the stations for the $50k machines that were purchased 8 years ago.

good price on that exhaust manifold/intake........well worth the shipping (which is probably $25).
