I just recenty bought a Hitachi NR83A2 on Ebay that appears to work great (shoots nails in board-what it's supposed to do). However it did not come with any instructions. I was hoping for some advice on folks that have used these things before (I haven't). Do I need to use a specific brand of nail and oil with the gun? What kinds of maintenance things do I need to do (cleaning, oiling, etc.). Also, what do I need to be aware of from a safety standpoint? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You should be able to download a manual from Hitachi which should provide the specs on the gun.

I would use regular air tool oil. You can buy them anywhere. Put 2-3 drops in the air inlet before each and be sure to wear goggles.

Best bet is to look up the specs on the Hitachi site. Specifies plastic collated strip nails, however you MAY be able to use paper collated also........wire seems more common in the Bostitch guns. As mentioned...a few drops of air tool oil in the gun's hose fitting each day of usage. Otherwise, if you're not working in the rain on a constant basis....just a little lubrication in the nose mechanism from time to time should provide you with trouble free operation for many years. As far as safety is concerned.....download an owner's operation manual from any framing gun maker(paslode, Bostitch etc...)...should give you the general idea. Just remember to keep your non-trigger hand(and feet too:doh:) well out of the way of the nail's path when holding wood to be nailed together. Recently heard of a guy working on some stairs....gun started to slip...stopped it with his knee...somehow the nose and trigger engaged at the same time and next thing he knew, he was wearing a 3 1/4 inch spike in his kneecap - OUCH! - These tools make life much easier! Have fun and be safe:D

x a lot. I can't tell you how many times I've almost done it.

Thanks for the information. However, I have a bit of a problem. I was trying it out with some 12d nails and I think I blew a seal. There's air leaking from around the trigger. The air stops when I pull the trigger in, but blows continuously when it's released. Any ideas?

I have the same gun, 10d nails max, (.131 x 3" max IIRC )

you can get a seal kit for it if it is infact a bad seal.

you need to go to their web site and download the manual before you break something more than just the nail gun.

Another safety note - keep everything important at least a full nail length away from where you are shooting the nail. up, down, sideways, etc. Occasionally the nail will hit something and turn on the way in and blow out the side of the piece. It's pretty common in finish nailers, but I've had it happen at least twice with framing nailers also.

Thanks for the information. I got the gun fixed - blown o-ring. Seems to be working ok now. :)
