My club made a trip down to Uwharrie NC this weekend and I finally got the truck ready to go. It took an all nighter rebuilding the steering box, installing shocks and getting some wiring sorted out, and then another 5 hours of wrenching at the camp ground to replace the "rebuilt" steering box with a junkyard unit and doing some wiring for the battery to get it ready to go, but at 11pm on Friday night it was ready to run. We headed out Saturday morning and here are my pics.

Ready to hit the trail after a couple long days and nights of wrenching.

The truck was making an awful rythmic thumping sound that was directly related to movement of the truck. Turns out the bolts had all come out of the transfer case mount and the transfer case had moved up and over about an inch and a half in both directions making contact with the body. Thanks to Caleb's big pry bar and Stinson's random supply of metric bolts, we were able to get it back together and move on with little drama :D

Next we headed up Daniel where Stinson's truck decided it was time for a nap :flipoff2:

Oops

Overall the truck did GREAT. No major problems other than the occasional sputter out of the motor. I was really pleased with its performance and had probably my best wheelin weekend ever. :smokin:

Thanks to everyone who has helped along the way and made this possible.

Can't believe you went to URE...that place isn't too far from me...it sucks  but it is a good place for testing

Yeah, I can't even begin to count the number of trips I made to Uwharrie with my old XJ, but it's a good place for a club to go because of the variety of difficulty on the same trails. Our club is pretty diverse in terms of experience and vehicle capability, so it works out well. Next big trip will probably be Harlan, Big Dogs or Tellico.

In the mean time I've got some work to do to finish up a few projects and then I gotta figure out what I'm gonna do with my trans/t-case setup. Can't decide if I wanna do auto or manual. I've got all the parts to do manual, so the $$ is in favor of that one, but I really love 'wheelin an auto, so my desires favor that one. We'll see which one wins out.

What pressure were you running?

It doesn't look like you were getting much flex out of the sidewalls....

8psi, I've run 3-4 before, but the tires burped a lot and I was afraid of losing a bead. Beadlocks will come eventually, but are not really near the top of the list of mods to come.

What you see in the pics is the hardest stuff Uwharrie has to offer. I wheeled Uwharrie 2 years ago in my stock 80 series and I have wheeled it in the past in a bone stock Jeep Cherokee. The great thing about Uwharrie is it's pretty much as easy or difficult as you want to make it. All of the hairy obstacles have stock passable bypasses.

sliders on the PS only?

I can see the driver's side, just can't see the passenger's side

Good eye, I had more important things to finish on the truck before the trip and the driver's side slider was the next thing on the list to do, but it didn't get done. Hopefully will get that taken care of this week or next. :grinpimp:

Technically, what you called the ledge below Kodak rock, *IS* Kodak.. the one after it could maybe be called "Upper Kodak" or something.

Really? I'm not going to claim I'm a Uwharrie expert, but I've been going there for the past 6 years or so and I've always heard the upper portion referred to as Kodak rock and the portion below as the rock garden below kodak. The bottom ledge didn't used to be a ledge at all, it used to just be a rock garden, but it has gotten pretty hogged out over time.

I could very well be wrong though.

I guess that means I can say I drove over Kodak Rock :grinpimp: (lame I know, but it's the only bragging rights I have so far ;p )

well if your in blacksburg, have you ever been to "bobcat trail" off of 460 near jefferson national forest? it has some spots that would make your truck work a little and you would be close to home in case something happened.

oh BTW im over in radford:D

Bobcat is a bunch of puddles. Ive had some good times out there stockish, but i think id be asleep at the wheel now.

I don't know if it was Bobcat, but Arya took me to some trails right outside of Blacksburg, most of it was really easy stuff but it had a nice washed out climb that would guarantee broken glass on an SUV.

Dr Frank, what do you drive? I visit RU often, 6" lifted 80, alum roof rack, Reflex liner on the flares/rockers, 33x12.50 ATs (they are tiny I know...38.5 boggers for the fun stuff).

Arya, Eskimo is right, the first part is Kodak, the second is just a rock. That rock used to be just a toe stumper, then there was a major washout after some poor trail management that exposed the second rock more and slightly buried Kodak. Kodak is now MUCH steeper and nastier than it was 8 years ago.

Do you have a sticker on the back that would stick in my mind in the fact that it was in interesting sticker..but I don't remember what it was. I was behind you in a crappy blue-purple 85 accord one day I believe. Tellico sticker maybe?
