My first Taco

Just bought my first Taco. A 2007 PreRunner V6 SR5 w/only 59k miles, SUPER clean and STOLE it for the price I paid!!!

So, before I go off on all the questions I have is this the right forum? I spend all my time on the 80 forum trying to make my LC better.

Bought it for my soon-to-be 16yo son. He's a 4.0 student, doesn't drink, smoke, dip or do drugs and he's the starting attackman for his HS varsity Lacrosse team. Wants to go to the Naval Academy, play lacrosse then defend our country. I can't afford a new one like he deserves so this was the next best thing and we're going to surprise him with it Christmas morning.

So here's the things I know I need to do (I am NOT a mechanic and it wouldn't help if I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express...)
- Tires/brakes are the original so they'll be replaced before he "officially" starts driving it in Feb.
- Fluids all are clean but I'm dropping the oil and replacing w/my personal fav Mobile 1 full syn
- Replacing the plugs & wires but not sure if I need to do the distributer cap
- Power mirrors have a few hiccups (Rside won't work, Lside only up/down

Any suggestions for a 60k, two owner truck that had very little use and spent a lot of time just sitting in the FL sun would be GREATLY appreciated along with names of trusted Toyota mechanics in Mobile/Baldwin counties in AL.

If you are doing fluids, you might as well flush and fill the rear diff. If brake fluid looks dark and original, flushing it would be wise to remove excess moisture.

plugs, yes..wires are not necessary and there is no distributor cap...they use ignition coils on the individual plugs


usually if one of the coils are going bad, you'll get a code

they're solid trucks to begin with...

but all main fluids (diffs, tcase, tranny, engine), plugs, engine and cabin air filters, check front of engine for any leaks (there's a TSB out there for a seal leak to the timing chain cover, http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/at...pdated-t-sb-0326-08-oil-leak-t-sb-0326-08.pdf), grease the driveshaft, check the rotors and pads, look into the TSB on the rear leaf pack if you plan to hold anything in the bed or tow (or go aftermarket), check the wheel bearings for play...just a lot of typical new to you vehicle maintenance items to look at...but it shouldn't take much to get it to be reliable

I would change the brake fluid for sure. Likely never been touched. I would do a drain/fill on the trans too as it's probably an automatic. If it has a limited slip diff make sure when you refill it you use either a limited slip additive in the fresh oil or use oil that already includes it. The serp belt likely hasn't been changed either. And while swapping that out I would drain the power steering and refill it as well as check all the idlers and tensioner for the serp belt. I've had 3 05 tacomas now and the belt coming off from a failing tensioner is the only thing that would have left me stranded in a few hundred thousand miles of driving them. Fortunately I was only a few miles from home and coasted it most of the way back. The only problem I've really had with all 3 of mine is front wheel bearings go out way more frequently than I feel they should (right around 75k miles like clockwork) and the ABS is downright scary when it snows. I put my ABS relay on a switch so I just shut it off. Pretty stout trucks though. I wouldn't feel bad about getting him a used one. Mines got 160k on it now and it drives just like a 2014 would. Haven't tried out a 2015 but it's the same chassis so it's probably not a whole lot different.
