Just discovered where the mice have found their way into the house. A downside of cooling with a swamp box, even with windows cracked, the vent flap is open and they have free access to chew through the exhaust hose and start crapping on the counters.

Peanut butter or cotton batten tied to the trip pedal of a Victor trap .... the only solution I have had any real luck with... although I have heard if you can get someone who owns a ferret to walk it around your house the scent left will cause mice and rats to vacate pronto.

Just don't let the ferret have free run -- they can chew through walls

it is important to get the mice out asap if you can - I have had the little bastards die in places I could not find/access ... but sure could smell... and it lingers for quite a while!

Who out there knows someone who owns a ferret? lol..
The Victor does produce dead bodies, we have had luck with that. Decon or Havoc is out of the question because of the lab that eats everything.

Bottom line is to block the source of entry that will be easy to clean, and doesn't look like crap..

can't beat the spring trap for inexpensive effectiveness.
I use peanut butter, put it on the detent and it will stay good for a long time if there are no ants. I try to have one trap set just about all the time in the garage just in case. Putting one in the truck outside from time to time too.

I just don't use poison, too much risk of smell problems.

Had free running ferrets as a teen. They can't chew thru walls but can squeeze thru a crack. The scent never scarred the mice but ferrets are excellent hunters. We'd hear them rustling around at night and a squeak.... The next morning we'd find a tail and a foot or two.

Add a ferret or a cat to the household. The mouse problem won't last long.

Seriously, John. You should install upducts, they open as needed and close when you turn off the cooler. No need to open and close windows and doors. They also vent into you attic, so you attic gets cooled as well. I suspect they would be very critter resistant.

Rob, that is a great idea but also opens another can of worms. The subcontractor who insulated our house sealed off the attic (some kind of Tucson Electric Power 'TEP' approved home). I have concerns about this only during the monsoon season when humidity peaks and adding a Mastercool in the mix. So far the air up there does get heavy in August, it doesn't seem to get saturated. Long story short, need to research this more, Maybe give Rosie a call one of these Saturdays.:D

Once the woodstove gets to work, I love the idea of having things sealed for the winter.

That's strange, I would think the attic needs some form of ventilation. If not, you may be able to put in some type of auto opening vent. The PO put upducts on my house, they are wonderful, especially with a Mastercool on a tstat.
