Hi, in case you aren’t familiar with me, I’m Scott Chaney. Among other things I’m a Mombasa / Car-Top-Tent dealer. Mombasa has approved the sharing of some of their exciting RTT news before it’s officially released.

First, the Expedition Series tents will be offered in a new “plus” version. The difference is a new rip stop poly/cotton fabric. This is a breathable and highly water repellent tent fabric. Mombasa tents will now be on par with the “high-end” tents on the market from a fabrics standpoint. Pricing is still being nailed down; looks like the “plus” version will add $200 - $300 to the cost. This still put the new tents price notably below the “high-end” equivalents.

I am patiently awaiting the arrival of this new product to test side-by-side with a standard model. I’ll let you know how waterproof they are and how the breathable fabric affects condensation build up here in the cold rainy Oregon winter conditions. In the photos below you can see how well water beads up on it and get an idea of how breathable it is with backlighting.

Mombasa is also introducing a new “family” size Expedition Series tent. It will be the same length as the current tent but 72” wide instead of the current 55”. Again; pricing isn’t firm but appears that the “family” size will add $200 - $300 to the cost. The “family” size tents will also be available in the new “plus” fabric.

These new tents should be available before Christmas. Just in time to purchase that special present for your beloved trail rig or trailer. I’ll post additional information as it becomes available. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

scott, there are a lot of owners of the original RTT on this board that would be interested in a decent fly cover for it. if they are reintroducing a tent of those dimensions will they supply a separate fly that would fit the old tent?

Yes, I noticed the interest from Zane's rainfly project.

I asked Mombasa to try the rainfly from the new family sized tent on a first generation tent. Unfortunately it didn't fit, bummer, could have been a cost effective solution.

Is this new breathable material the same material used on the ARB tent?

I'm not sure, although from comparing pictures of a Mombasa and ARB they appear to be very similar. I've heard many "rumors" these tents are made in the same factory, still trying to nail down a definitive yes or no.
