Ok, been thinking about this for a while and I know a good many of you have already done this trip, but I'd like to try and make this run sometime this winter.

Just want to get an idea if anyone is interested and we'll go from there. Nothing too formal because I wont be able to help organize much, but I'd love to meet some more of you guys and head out for a long weekend camping and cruising.

January sometime? Possibly February?

How random,

I was just talking to a friend today about possibly doing this trip at the end of the month, and did a search on this site to find out more info about it and run across this thread

You going to do this Scott? I think it's doable for me. No scouts until the 23-25th of January.

I was organizing this run but backed out when the rig count got to 15. John has taken over the organizing and it will be a good run and probably only include about 10 rigs since lots of folks have dropped out. Anything over 7 rigs and or 15 people and you have to get a permit with the Parks Depart. and contact the BLM which John is working on now. Several of the guys going know all the good spots to visit out there. It should be a good time.

Gotcha - I've never done it and had missed out on the fabulous trip SOCALFJ put together a year or so ago. RFJTOY was on the trip as well. Did it the same way...started from the far end and worked their way back to SoCal. Three full days on the trail should make it a relaxing trip with plenty of time to see all the good spots too!

Oh hell ya! I have been kicking this trip around with a buddy of mine for a few months now. I am friggin tied up in a MBA program, but if i can sneak away...I am in!

Dave do you know the coords. for the turn off to the volcanic caves or how far from the mailbox you turned and what direction you headed? Thx.

Aiken Mine road is a well graded north/south road that is approximately half way between the Mailbox and Kelbaker Road. It is tough to miss and actually shows up on my Alpine In Car navigation system (and so does the Mojave Road, but it is named "Old Government Road" by the Alpine Nav). Aiken Mine Road also intersects the KelBaker Road further south (by 500 yards or so) than the Mojave Road does.

Hey thanks for that. I'll probably be able to find it on Google Earth with your help. I still have an ancient Garmin point A to point B GPS I bought for sailing. Some day I'll go modern. :hillbilly:

FYI Google Earth also calls the Mojave Road "Old Government Road".

Just found it on Google Earth

35 12'57.63" N by 115 45'062.21" W

That's where the ladder into the lava tube is. My Google Earth actually has an old picture of the ladder.

If you follow the Aiken Mine Road south from there, it intersects the Mojave Road at:

35 10'25.83" N by 115 46'36.84 W

The Aiken Mine Road is MUCH LARGER and MUCH BETTER defined on Google earth than the Mojave Road, which is very faint and blends in with the desert background.

Sorry im late on my response. I would have to look up the coords, since i didn't lead that trip.. but what Jon said above is right on the money anyhow. It's not hard to find at all. Welcome to mud Jon!

Sometimes I use this to help me find stuff. Gotta take it with a grain of salt though since anyone can tag items. Can be very useful though!

I'd like to come on the trip in January, sounds fun.

I'll check your coords with what I found last night. Thanks again. :)

Didn't you just get done saying you were on here 24/7. Just kiddin' man, pullin' your leg, thanks Dave. The pics on your site look cool. I had no idea the mine is just several miles past Beale mountain, my favorite campsite out there.

I'll check this out, thanks. If you're speaking of the OAUSA trip, just sign up and sign up if you know what I mean. Do you know Steve (Doberman Steve ;)) forget his screen name on Mud? He is going and maybe a few other 80's/Lexus's. His screen name on OAUSA is Thatsalexus?

Thanks for the write up. I REALLY want to make this run, but that weekend in Jan is looking very bad at the moment.
