Too many to chose from. Compount, sliding, laser, 10", 12" etc.

For now I just want to cut 2x4 and 2x6, but don't know if I'll use it for something else long term. Got any suggestions?

If you are not going crazy cutting all kinds of stock/angles, go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a basic single compound 10" miter saw. Ou can get one real cheap. If you decide you are going to need more saw later, move up and put a steel cuttoff blade in the basic one. 12" compound sounds way overkill for what you describe.

Second that motion.

Unless you plan on doing a whole ton of crown, base, & door trim on a regular base, go spend 150-200 & p/up a 10" Delta or equivalent.

If your making a living at it, or doing your entire house & possibly helping others down the road with their mill work then I'd recommend the following.

First choice. DeWalt 708 12" double bevel sliding
Second Bosch 5412 12" double bevel sliding
Third DeWalt 706 double bevel (not the sliding)

I would recommend the DeWalt stand, (DW723) all these will fit to.

I've had the DeWalt 708 for 7yrs & White Shark has had is over 10. Great saws and still as accurate as the day we bought them.

Second the motion on the Dewalt - I have the 705 (refurb) and have used it for everything from crown molding to a playground for my kids. Has never let me down.

No reason to get a 12" unless you need it. The saw itself is more expensive, bigger to stow, and heavier to carry. The blades are also twice as expensive and if you do any finish-grade work, 12" blades (even expensive ones) can be frustrating with high-speed wobble.

I use the DeWalt 706 for custom decks (side business) and sometimes I still drag out my old Delta 10" for making cuts in Ipe and Ulin.

I'd seriously check your local pawn shops. I see nice saws frequently selling for less than 1/2 retail price. With the money you save, you can get nice 60T and 40T blades.

If you get the cheap saw replace the blades with quality ones and you'll hugely improve performance.

$99 Delta compound miter saw at Lowe's.

I had originally set out to buy an expensive saw. After taking the recommendation of a friend I hesitantly went with the Delta. I've since used it to frame two basements, do a bunch of trim work, and build an out building. I'm now convinced that for a home owner anything more expensive is a waste of money.
