I recently asked if running my 2003 Tundra on the spare, which had a lot more tread than the other tires, could cause popping sounds and my truck to hop when disengaging 4 Hi. I didn't think it could. In my defense, a lot of people agreed with me. I am ashamed to admit but I also told my local Toyota service manager who was used to Dodge's that only "crappy Dodges" would be affected by something so minor. Well, I was wrong. After taking the truck to a different Toyota dealer and being told the same thing, I just got 4 new tires and now the Tundra goes in and out of 4WD with no popping nor hopping.
I still will never take the truck back to my original dealer because the shop was poorly managed and they first told me nothing was wrong at all. They said I just needed to put the transmission in neutral before shifting into 4 HI. They also didn't vacuum it out as part of my routine oil change which is a pet peeve of mine.
The good news is, my new dealer talked to me more about the 60k servicing. I'd glanced through the manual but kind of forgot- I've only had the truck for 5 months and 5500 miles. I'm glad they brought it up again because the rear end , auto tranny and radiator fluids all needed changed out- especially the rear end. (I'm going to do the spark plugs myself.) I'm glad now that I had this all done. I kind of would've thought that the Toyota Certified inspection would've seen this was all coming due and done it but it is my fault for not asking.
I know it may seem trivial but the new shop took the time to vacuum the truck out too.
