For some reason, my passenger front door lock is very intermittant - as in sometimes it will not lock. You can press down on the knob, and feel the mechanism "bowing", but it will not lock. Then last night, after I was finished doing some Cruise Moab prep, it locked easy as pie...

I have pulled the door panel and cleaned the mechanism down by the latch w/ brake clean and followed w/ pb blaster.

Any ideas?

Also on PS front door, the window rolls down easy, but going up is very difficult. I am afraid of breaking something - any observations around this?

Last item, the dome light. PO broke off the little lever that turns dome light on. Has anyone engineered a fix for this?

TIA,

as for the lock....on my pig if the door isn't completely closed all the way or not quite seated right it wont lock. You can feel that bowing. I have to reopen the door and close it hard.

my windows only really roll up and down "smoothly" when it is above 65°. So I dunno.

and the dome light....I'm in the same boat. :sigh:

I agree with usm about the door lock. Check the alignment of the striker to the cam.

For the window, open up the door panel and see iff the regulator is bent at the pivot points. If so, you can starigten it out, but it's a temporary fix, usually. Probably out of alignment.

There IS an adjustment in that pushrod length...but, IIRC, you have to pull the lock out of the door to get to it. Therefore, mine doesn't lock either. One of these days I'll get around to fixing that.

the grease on your window regulator is old and crappy and hard (probably one issue with your lock also). good cleaning and new lube. i'll get around to doing mine someday.

My windows are also hard to roll up, my window glass is lifting out of the base track of the regulator at an angle . Lower your window, remove the door panel , if you can lift your glass out of the base track with litte effort it needs to be reset using a glass bonding glue. One of the lower corners will lift up causing the window to bind against the side tracks. That was my problem.

The channel that holds the window glass had one of the ears broken off on my '55. I welded that up last week.

Charles

I have not fix mine yet, the ears ? they hold the glass in the channel? Do you have a picture ?

Lou

Sorry, I did not take pics. I'm talking about the two parts that extend from the channel the glass is in and bolt to the regulator. On my window only one end was bolted to the regulator the other end was still bolted but the bolted part separated from the window glass.

Ok, I was dead wrong, the drivers window is set tight in the channel and its still hard to roll up and the passenger side glass lifts out of the channel when its rolled all the way down, not when it's going up. I think the window is binding on the old window channel felt, maybe it's worn down to the rubber, so Marshall's graphite spray may be the fix. Or replace the felt and see if that helps.

Some updates: the PS door lock seems to be getting a little better.

My driver's side door lock was really stiff, like I was afraid for my key unlocking it in the morning. I douched that mechanism w/ brake clean and then went in w/ PB Blaster - key runs easy as pie now.

I pulled the dome light cover and found the bulb is still good. I noticed light has 3 positions! On, Off and Other? What is 3rd position for?

The triangle piece shown in all your pictures is what broke off of mine.

I'd like to know too, especially since my dome light can actually be switched 'cause the little lever is still there :) There are no door switches like newer cars so it cannot be a coutesy light setting.
