Hey Team,

I noticed today that the clamp on the front drivers side leaf spring is broken, so the top bar is misaligned. Just looking for opinions on urgent this is to repair? I suppose I should replace both front springs, but might try something a bit more ghetto like just tacking it up with a bit of weld....

Hello,

Have the front leaf springs replaced.

A tack welding will not help much, and may end up causing the leaves to break.

You can even use this as an excuse for a suspension upgrade.

thanks Juanj!

worth replacing. re welding cracks can be disappointing. I looked into getting springs re sprung but it was pretty close to just getting new ones from dobinsons with ozzie wages and living expenses..
also it was the most effective way of eliminating the front factory steering clunk.
Nice job to do yourself. I personally think the hd fronts are unnecessary although dobinsons recommend them, it changes the geometry of the front drive shaft unless you have the weight of the old fashioned steel cable winch.

I'm no help regarding what has caused the misalignment.

But if you decide to replace, I can recommend Terrain Tamer parabolic springs. I have a set on the front of one of my HZJ75's and it seems to ride smoother than it did with the springs that were on it before.

2 springs
4 u-bolts
12 bushes

$930

What mixed reports have you heard?
that's not a bad price. I have read people having trouble fitting them as in wrong size which is certainly fixable, did not last very long, not as good a weight bearing capacity, and kickback when unloaded. This is only what i have read on the net , so hearsay.

But they do appear a good design. If it can help against the front leaf spring slip clunk it has to be better. It is why toyota went coils in the front for later model lc s.

Let us know how they are next year please? I don't mind the leaf springs simple as long as maintained.

looks like it took a whack on a rock or something,,,, i'm not seeing a replacement issue of yet,,, i'd whack it with a hammer to see if it pops back inline then give the clamp a good straighten and squeeze before buying new springs..

I agree, it does not look too bad overall, but the fuller story of how long have you had it?, does it clunk when slowly turning when it rains?. When were the knuckles rebuilt last? You won't know the extent of the condition until you look at the springs and perches disassembled. A bit goes on with all the components of the front.

If the front leaves of a 30+ lc is left unchecked due to it's design the holes of the saddle perches slop out as in the nasty picture, from a paddock basher. I have restored the holes and balls on another axle housing, not as well as some on here, it is difficult to find a used one in good condition.

30+ years, one has to go over the whole vehicle really, in time. Not saying yours shall look like this, but they end up this way if neglected. Your plastic grommet does not look 30+. And from your pics, yours looks pretty neat. How are your spring bushes?
Also depends on your temperament, some spend all their money and time loving their cruisers others drive them into the ground. Sometimes you see cheap used springs in pretty good nick on fb marketplace as folks fashionably get springs with lift.

I do like the design of the anti inversion greaseable shackles personally, dobinsons have a hollow nut to protect the grease nipple which was a selling point to me.

Grand scheme, personally I like to have my cruiser in the best condition I can afford, for peace of mind when remote. You may get another 100k kms from those springs without worries, but if you hear a front clunk when it rains, I would get greaseable shackles and fresh springs and you can forget about it for quite a few years. If you knew how old the springs were it would help. If not old, just bend the clamp back, maybe ok if you re weld it. Bit of an irony when things are the same price to fix as to buy new..too full of opinion i am!

Terrain Tamer only sell greaseable shackles and pins. But their bushes are not supposed to be greased other than the small tube of assembly grease that comes with them. Therefore I am unable to understand why they only sell greaseable shackles and pins.
