Mirror doesn't tilt down.. Need to replace entire mirror unit?

My passenger mirror doesn't tilt down. If I push on it and then press the down arrow I hear the motor working, but it tilts up instead of down.

Toyota says I need a new painted mirror and all. Anyone had to deal with this before?

Sounds right. Some Toyota models you can buy the actuator separately, some you cannot.

I'd also inspect the mirror internals and wiring. There's a chance the PO installed an LX mirror, which is internally different than the LC version.

Toyota has had Service Bulletins on the Lexus mirrors which do the auto down/up movement in reverse/drive. There is a mirror ECU in the driver door and actuating mechanism in the mirror. If the ECU has been updated, then the mirror would be the next step. For Lexus 98-01 LX the number is L-EL006-01.
