I'm going to take a welding class next month and one of my first planned projects is to make a trailer. My wife thinks I am becoming senile as I get older. I know it will cost me way more to buy a welder and build a trailer than just buy a trailer, but she just doesn't get it. I have long wanted to learn to weld and of course buying a welder is just part of the package.

I stumbled on this military surplus trailer up for bid. Do you think it would make a good carcass to start my trailer build, or would I just be better off starting from scratch? This trailer is located about 5 mi. away, so travel is not an issue.

I'd bid on it,, If you get a new axle with a matching hub to your tow rig it be a great platform,, the frame cant be all that heavy,, The axle and drums probably is tho..
If I could find one of these near NE Pa. I'd get one!

I would bid on it.

Just remember that you can get those military trailer ready to roll down the road for around $800.00 from several people here in MUD.

Figure up what the metal, wiring, light will cost you and some add fab time $$. Subtract that from $800.00 and see where you end up.

I am in the market finally for one..............who would you be referring to, anyone in California?

trailer

I am pretty sure that is a 3/4 ton platform. It looks identical to mine other than that I have a pioneer tool box on mine:D. I think it could make a great set up.

FWIW, I would build your chassis from scratch. I have maybe 135 in steel for the frame, and another 195 into the axle and suspension. That and you can use the chassis as a great place to start learning to weld.

That is the route I took.

Just my .02

Thanks for the advice. Maybe I'll bid $50 or $75 and if I get it, it will be worth the hassle of dealing with the government.

I doubt you are dealing with the government on this one, This looks like a subcontractor to Uncle Sam. Get it, it will be a fun build and the guys here on MUD will walk you thru all the ins and outs. Good luck. There is a lot of knowledge here.

The bidding on the government auction is through a private company, but if I get it, I have to go through some paperwork that I will "demiltarize" it. I understand that can take 45 days. I pasted the information below. Seems a little anal to me for two tires and some rusted iron.

"winning bidders in Special Commodities Sales (BQ Sales Events) must submit an End-Use Certificate (EUC), DLA Form 1822. Trade Security Control (TSC) must approve your EUC before any property can be removed or payments processed. One EUC is required from the customer per sales event not per lot won. NOTE: Customers with prior EUC approval are still required to submit an EUC per sales event.

An EUC may also be required if the demilitarization code of an item changes (migrates) to any code other than an "A" code. Depending on the code change, Government Liquidation will direct you to either return the item or submit an EUC. Note: demil code changes can take place at any time before or after the completion of an "A" code sales event."

I would definitely bid on it. It looks no ttoo bad and even if you find that it's too far gone or beyond your skills to make a decent trailer form it, you'll easily get your money back by parting it out or selling it whole!

Do it. We need another trailer build thread on this site!!!!!!!

thats the first ive seen of those, ive looked at the trailer with the beds and sides and figured they would be way to heavy

That looks like a M101 missing its tub. That's is a LOT bigger then you think. Its rated as a 3/4 ton

Those were built to be pulled by the M37 and the Deuce and latter the Hummer. Even says so on that link.

That bed is going to be somewhere around 9-10ft long. The out side of the wheels is 72 inches. According to the plate on that link that thing is a little over 12ft from ball to bumper.

If it went for under $100 I would say it would be worth messing with but much more then that you going into the negative especialy if you plan to swap ot a conventional axle. You would be better off finding a older 4x8 with a 3500lb axle on www.craigslist.org

Trailer went for $283.68 plus 10% buyer's fee for a total of about $310.

I dropped out at $70.
