Show yourselves, school me, I wanna buy for a daily driver...300E looks good

I am not an expert, but i have worked on quite a few. Be leary. I just had a mid nineties in the shop and he had just bought it. Unfortunately for him it had all of the cliche problems with that platform. The headgaskets leak oil from the back right corner, his was pouring out. The tranny shutters in reverse, new one is the proper fix. The wiring harness for the engine can rot also. If you are looking into a wagon be careful of the self leveling rear suspension. They can get very stiff and require replacement of the accumulators. In general most of the MBZs come with the in line six cylinder engine which is a very solid and reliable engine. And they dont all have the tranny problems. Try to find one with these things taken care of or maybe one with low mileage. Good luck. AND DEFINITELY HAVE A MBZ SPECIALIST DO A PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION BEFORE YOU BUY IT.

i just saw your other post. It looks like you are looking for something newer than what i am talking about. im pretty sure they weeded out those problems as they got newer. in my opinion the E300 is a great car.

Thanks much, I'm not sure what I want but I had to start somewhere. Your info is exactly what we Cruiserheads like to dig into so thanks much. I do like the E class wagons and would try to afford as late a model as possible but not new. I'll be posting back as my search continues, in fact, stopping by the Mercedes Dealership tomorrow - besides a good laugh, ya never know what's sitting in ther back 40 of the trade -in lot - it's how I found the Land Cruiser I now drive. Tom

What year are you looking at? Do you want a 124, 210, or 211 chassis? I work at a Benz dealer, (mechanic not salesman!) and we work on alot of E class, not so much the older 124's though.

My wife has a 95 E300 Diesel and it is a great car! 95 is the last year of the 124 chassis.

If indeed you are interested in the older E's (86-95), I recommend you buy the book, "Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W124) Owner's Bible: 1986-1995."

It is helpful even if you don't own one yet, as it has a buyer's guide as well.

I'm currently selling my 2003 CLK55 AMG, if you're interested.

PM me if you'd like.

Try the forum that is someting like www.benzworld.org. it's pretty big. There was another call threepointedstar.com but i can't find them know.

They have had lots of problems with the cars since 2000. Google it and you will find some very interesting material and dealers recall issues. Many people feel that you should avoid the MB products that have been built after that year. Though it seems the cars of the 90s have plenty of trouble as well. I have owned plenty of german cars and they seem to have more issues than other makes such as Audi/BMW. I would be very careful and do a ton of research. Euro cars can eat you alive in repair costs like you can't image when compared to your toyota.

A new trans might cost as much as the whole car!

I have read all about the problems. but I have owned a couple of E55s, a CLK55, and an CL class, and they have all been flawless performers. Very little shop time. I bought them all used and did all the research before buying. My wifes in a 04 E55 with 40k miles on it now,and when I pulled the records, the car had only been in for service for scheduled maintenance. I am not a Mercedes advocate by any means, but I do think that they are a good car overall.

great cars if taken care of...i love that straight 6.

big money pits if not taken care of. definitely have a pre-purchase inspection done.

if you're looking for something with a little more room and muscle, the W126 (560sel) is a great car. same caveats as above apply.

keep us posted...
