Can anyone recommend a local (Columbus) sand/media blaster. I have used Redi Strip in the past and they are way too expensive. Another option-does anyone have an oversized blasting booth (needs to be at least 3 ft deep 5 ft wide and 3 ft high) I can rent. My hard top is finished and I want to blast it down before I paint. Let me know.

If you're just stripping paint I would recommend soda blasting. If rust too, then glass. Sand is too abrasive IMO and can warp sheet metal.

Dean,
Don't know who is cheap for blasting in Cols. Look in the yellowpages, call and ask around. Maybe somebody is looking for work and will give you a good price.

FWIW, I have a pressure blaster you can use to blast here on the gravel drive, so the sand actually helps fill in the cracks. Bring your own sand & primer and have at it.

Jim,
You make me laugh. My brother said the same thing.

Dean, I used Jimmy's blaster to do my frame on the FJ-40 way back when. I don't think I'd do that again (two of the hottest days in July, duh) but to clean up your hardtop for paint I don't think it would be too bad. The price is right for sure.

If you do decide to do it yourself, make sure you wear a respirator.

You'll need some fairly dry weather too. Humidity wants to clog the blaster pretty quick. You are just cleaning up the panels for paint, right? You will need to be ready to coat with a primer sealer as soon as you are finished. The bare metal will begin to rust immediately. Don't want to waste all that effort.

Are you going to do the paint work or sub that out?
