Hey guys, I have numerous things I need replaced on my lx450. I don't really have the time to do myself, especially without a lift.

You guys have any recommendations for a good mechanic - especially one that might use parts I supply?

I need my power steering pump, ps high pressure hose, upper oil pan gasket, valve cover gaskets, possibly more replaced. Wife is getting sick of all the oil stains in the street and driveway. I'm in Leawood/OP area.

That said, I'd supply pizza and beers/soda if anyone has a lift and wants help!

I use SK Mechanic in Olathe. Ask for Mark. I think he used to work for Slee. Tell him Tad sent you.

I'd hate to see what a mechanic would charge you for that list. A long time ago when I used to let others work on my vehicles they normally wouldn't let you bring your own parts. General practice is they buy the parts from the same place you do but at a discount, then mark them up for profit.

That being said, I have often thought I should offer a service to club members where you supply the parts and I perform the work for less than half what a mechanic would charge. It seems a few times a year somebody is asking about where to get a front end done, knuckles done, PS system, AC, etc. I know the dealership will gouge you for over $1k to do the knuckles and its really maybe a 5 hour job once you've done several of them.

The jobs you mentioned above are time consuming but not difficult. With the exception of the upper oil pan seal. That could be a real bastard. The last and only time I've done one of those the engine was sitting in a stand !

Thanks for the recommendation BigRed.

I agree with the rest of you guys. Right now, I'm not finding the free time I'd need to tackle myself, or I'd probably be doing a lot of this myself too.

As for supplying own parts, I'm fine with a mechanic/shop making a margin on the parts, what gets me though is when I can readily source a part for $250, and a shop wants to charge me $1200 or more for said part (that's already happened to me). Maybe I'm wrong, but that feels excessive.

My biggest priority is the power steering pump and high pressure hose, the other items can wait.
