In case you haven't seen this yet, the current Toyota Trails magazine has an article I wrote about a little expedition I went on awhile back with Bob Devereux and Mark Algazzy. I entitled the article "What I learned in the Maze". I created a web page with a map of the general area, 130 photos that weren't in the magazine article and a half dozen 360 degree interactive panoramas.

What I learned in the Maze

First off great photos! The 360's are nice. Also great article in TT.

I've spent time in the other 2 parts of Canyonlands but not the Maze. Is it much more difficult than the Needles district? Or is it more of an issue of remoteness?

Would love to do a similar trip.

One of the rangers at Canyonlands recommended leaving oneself some extra days of vacation when going to the Maze for the "what if's".

Also he mentioned that if one needed a tow out of the Needles at that time (10 yrs ago) it would be about a $1000!

I am sure it would cost twice that now. That tow job would be very very difficult. I did not see any abandoned vehicles in there. I don't think the rangers would put up with that for very long.

Fortunately for us, it didn't rain enough for us to have to drive up or down any water soaked trails made of Bentonite. I hear that when those trails get wet, and they can be along very high ledges, that it can be very frightening, skittering up with spinning tires as your truck fish tails.

Been on bentonite once. Not pretty! Like being on grease, slipping and sliding all over the place! It was down near Hurricane, Utah in my brother's Trooper. A gentle uphill with a slant, even in 4WD gravity took over.

On some of the terrain in Canyonlands, it was suggested to bring chains for all 4 tires and even that might not work!

The Maze is the least visited Park in the lower 48. Been there twice, have only passed by two other vehicles over the course of 8 days. It is a great place and you MUST allow "extra" time to check out the cool stuff, or enjoy one area. Travel can take much longer than you expect due to rocks and ruts.

Chris,

Great write up in TT. I am a novice when it comes to this great "sport/passion" of overland travel, and I am completely inspired by your photos! The 360 shots are captivating and I can not wait to visit areas like the maze once I relocate out west. Keep up the good work!
