talked to a guy today that had an 05' + Taco and said he added a K&N stock replacement, a Flowmaster, a Mass Air Flow Sensor, and a Throttle Body Spacer.
The 4.0L is rated at I think 236hp, and he said he had it on a dyno and it rated 285hp.
This sounds good, but I'm not sure.
I have a 07' Taco w/a 4.0, and a stock replacement K & N, and a flow Master. I have read that a TB Spacer can add HP, mostly at the low end (Torque), but an extra 42 HP ? I question that as I'm not into, or lack the experience of lots of bolt on's.
I would like the xtra HP, as I pull an RV, as well as light wheeling. (Getting to and from hunting/fishing /camping spots/and hopefully some trail running.
Any inputs from MUDDER'S:bounce:

I guess what I'm asking is, what does adding or changing out the MAF do exactly?
Does it change something in the trucks computer? Is it like putting in larger jets in a carb?
I know what the Throttle body spacer does.

The throttle body spacer does nothing on modern EFI engines, and tends to be a waste of money.

I find 285 hp very hard to believe. If it were that easy to bolt on a few things and gain 40+ HP on a naturally aspirated motor everyone would do it...heck Toyota would be adding it on! It takes a TRD supercharger to make around 305 HP. I seriously doubt an intake, exhaust, and spacer will make that much extra power. As for the K&N, I know you have one but some people like them, and some don't...it all depends how you use the truck, but they don't make a ton of power on their own either.

I have no idea what he means in reference to his MAF, since the truck comes with one already. I doubt any other model MAF will work, and all it does is read the amount of oxygen entering the engine anyway. I suppose he could have had a custom engine tune done, but if he didn't mention it I seriously doubt he did that. I'm stumped, but I don't think he's anywhere near that power level.

SC, is there an after marker MAF that is, or is advertized as a performance upgrade?
I've looked alittle on line, and sure - everyone wants to sell me a new MAF.

and yes, I've seen the TRD Supercharger, but I can't see an extra $5K

Yeah maybe that was it. I don't think many people put those on unless they plan to add forced induction. I've never really heard of aftermarket MAFs, but then I don't really look for power adders for my motor.

And I wasn't suggesting you get the supercharger (it a pretty expensive option, with all the add-ons that go with it). I was just stating that I wasn't sure his bolt-ons made almost as much power as a TRD-supercharged motor.

K&N in a stock airbox... +5HP

Flowmaster... +5-10HP at the top end, and maybe lost some low-end torque.

TB Spacer... nada, maybe a sweet whistle noise on one of those dumbass "turbo" spacers. :D

MAF... The only option I can find is the URD calibrator, at most +15hp.

So he gained, at most, 25-30hp over stock. The numbers he got are also kind of useless without before and after dyno pulls as some dynos give overly inflated numbers. He could also be correcting for crank HP from a rear-wheel HP number and doing the calculation a bit wrong.

Kid said he put it on a Dyno. I did not question him any further as I was on my way into work.
