I have been lurking and reading up on all the great info on the forums. So shout out to the community

Recently we sold the family's 2005 Nissan Pathfinder and have been eyeing the 100 series since January. Since I'm in New England, we're pretty much limited to the selection of clean rigs.

I came across a local ad for a 2004 model with about 139K. Looks like it was a New York City car. Test drive was good with the exception of the rear brake rubbing noise and left side mirror not working.

On to the question. When i looked under the car I was expecting to find a good deal of rust. But instead looked pretty clean. My first thought is that it have been sprayed. While some locations are worst than others, some looked very clean. Not sure what to make of it yet. What do the experts think?

It's cleaner than I'd expect given your location. Looks like most parts starting to rust could be removed and then repainted or replated.

What the hell happened to the crossmember that supports the transfer case skid plate? I'd definitely address that as part of the price discussion. I'd probably be under the truck with a tape measure for an hour or two. ;)

I have actually seen this crossmember shape in three cars. Must be by design

Dealer spray painted all the rust for a quick sale, the upper control arms are what the rest of the under side looked like before.

Sprayed,
Look at the contrast of the drive shaft and rear axle. I suspect the drive shaft that is rusty was on top when they sprayed.
Also you can see overspray and they missed some spots just a little left and towards the of the picture. I think it is an anchor arm bolt that you can see no rust on the top of it but rust on one side.
check the rear wheel wells in the back portion as dirt and salt holds there and will perforate

At least the gas tank shield is still in one piece which is better than many.

assume its laden with heavy surface rust, you can see it at the joints and the bolts/washers.
try to remove a couple bolts and see how free they are and what the underside looks like but you can be certain that's a quick spray paint cover up for quick sale.. as JOFS said the drive shaft says it all...

still might not be that bad though just be extra cautious.
