I was looking at a carputer setup or a itronix laptop, but decided a standalone GPS device was the better way to go, atleast for now.

I just preordered the Lowrance IWay 600c. I think it ships next week. I was looking at the new Bajas, but they don't do turn-by-turn navigation or POI. I need turn-by-turn in order to get it past the wife ;)

Here is why I ordered it:
Sealed
Large 5" 640x480 screen
30GB hard drive (25GB taken up by maps)
Linux Support
Topo/Lake/Marine capability
5GB of MP3 storage
FM Modulator for streaming MP3 to radio

The only thing it lacks is bluetooth support to call numbers in the POI database.

I will post my impressions here once I actually get it.

Did you get yours yet? I saw on a few sites they are saying mid to late march for shipment :crybaby:

No, I haven't gotten it yet and I have seen the same quotes...bummer...

Oh, I have gotten my Iway600c and have been using it for a few months now.

First, the favorite feature is its mp3 playing capability that can be broadcasted to your radio. Navigation will pause the music during voice commands.

The satellite maps aren't that impressive but I did like that it will plot elevations on the map which is very nice. The screen is nice large, easily readable. The software doesn't appear to be fully featured like a garmin. I don't think there is a detour mode, or avoid an area mode. It does warn you about tolls, but it also plotted a course that took me to a ferry without warning me.

This GPS can easily do off-road (elevation, point-to-point navigation), on-road (turn-by-turn navigation) and marine use (depth charts). It can't be used for hiking, or biking but many people use them on motorcycles.

Go with the pioneer avic -n3
You can use the fact that you can connect a rear view camera to it Plus voice for turn by turn with a much larger screen to sell it to the wife.
Of course you can add just about any thing else to it as well.
Check it out

The last time I checked the Avic-n3 couldn't do topo maps. If it could that would be what I would get. My understanding was that none of them, Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine have added Topo map features. Leaving those who want to use them in the backcountry stuck with something from Garmin or the iWay.
