I haven't bought a GX470 yet but I think I really want one for my next vehicle. I have 8 years in a Jeep Rubicon but it is too small and it sucks on pavement so I like the idea of the GX and especially the price, otherwise I'd be looking at 4runners... One thing though is the crawl ratio, I have become accustomed to the 84:1 crawl ratio, especially the 4:1 transfer case low gear. Are there any aftermarket options to reduce the 2.7:1 to a 4:1? I know the V8 torque will make up for some of the crawl ratio so I don't need to get all the way to 84:1 put meeting it halfway there would be nice???

Very low transfer gear are only advantageous for rock crawler. You are buying wrong vehicle for a rock crawler. It got too much glass and sheet metal.

Where I travel most of the time I have to use 2nd start to be able to gest faster wheel speed and less torque to maintain forward progress. Here in the Midwest it's very common to see people that buy Rubicon as their first 4X4 and it get stuck on mud or any slippery hills. Lower gear is not the answer for everything.

3.115 low range gear are available for 100 series HF2A transfer case. The front diff is on passenger side so it would not work without a solid axle swap.

Thanks for the info and reply. I don't do too much real rock crawling like the Rubicon trail or Moab, but more steep and rugged hills like Lipincott or Mengel Pass in Death Valley, the back side of Big Bear as well as a few other places that I find myself crawling along over really rough and steep fire roads for hours in 4x4 low. Most times I am in 2nd gear and Low, saving 1st for emergencies. Do the GX's have a HF2A transfer case, is that the right model? If so then that is good, it's just nice to know that there is an option to go lower if I need to. Jeeps get stuck in mud, sand and slippery surfaces mostly because of the traction control won't let the wheels spin. If you don't know to turn it off the vehicle totally handicaps itself...

no way to lower the gearing in a stock tcase for the GX, 4Runner, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser. the only way to get anykind of lower gear in the tcase would be to install either a crawl box, or an atlas
