Hi All
Anyone on here ever upgraded their Diesel torque converters to a low stall more efficient unit.
Want some real life experiences and results.
Was it off the shelf or custom designed and made?
Multi clutch lock up?
Furnace brazed?
Not fussed what engine box combo but case in point is an A340 mated to a 1KZTE.

Cheers
Calvin

Bit of an update, have a converter coming in from Aussie... Dominator converters have built one for me. They were saying the factory ones for my year have a negative angled turbine... The newer units for the D4D 1KD diesel have a positive angle which makes it bite more.... So they are throwing that in the one I get... also it will be furnace brazed which makes them stronger and reduces the blades moving inside.... Its currently on the water coming over the ditch.... Should have it all in and tested Mid March.... will report back.

Hi Bro,
How about your new torque converter proformed?

Its a bit tighter than the original one. Feels much firmer. Will do some towing with it soon...That will be a good test.

Another update for those who run the A340 series trans and high torque diesels...
And the flare issue I was having when hitting the loud pedal....
Had a talk with an Aussie Transmisson guy. Been racing and modifying the A340 series autos for over 30 years.... Basically the torque converters cant cope with the higher torque generated when you mod the diesels.. Over drives them... The 1KD in aussie have the same issues when they mod the ecus and chip them. The original engine maps hold the torque back a bit to allow the auto to keep up..They have tried everything within the confines of the std box... Uprated valve bodies, tweaked torque converters etc etc... The clutch packs dont slip so thats not the issue. He is working on a larger diam torque converter .. Bigger converters = lower stall... but its having limited results....plus it $$$. There is only so much room in a std bell housing to play with. So we may have reached the limit with regards the A340 autos and high torque diesels.
I have one last mod to do on mine before I give up and put in a 5spd R151.... The oil pumps changed pump volumes and pressure over the years. bigger pumps were used.... mine has the smallest pump you can have... So have found one that is bigger and might throw that one in and see if it helps.

Very interesting, thanks for keeping us updated.

I thought with these being mated to the 2JZGTE and 1UZFE/2UZFE that they could take the power. But maybe it's because those motors don't make peak torque until a much higher rpm?

They can take the power. But low down torque at low revs like we get with a diesel engine overdrive the converter let them rev and they work sweet in a ricer engine.

Did you have any more luck with sorting out a lower/tighter stall converter?
I'm having the same dramas with my 1kz/a340 Dyna bus. Stall is too high. Revs drop a crazy amount when the torque converter lockup engages
