Anyone else think there is a lot of plastic on the FJC ?

I'm not trolling:rolleyes: , this is just an initial impression I got when I got up close to one this month at my dealership. I don't really pay too much attention to many new vehicles these days so maybe everything is coming off the lot like this.

yea man,....pretty much all new cars are plastic - has something to do with all those politicians, lobbyists and governement studies i imagine...

It has a lot of plastic. Mainly bumpers, and the "a" pillars. This is not Toyota trying to be cheap or give us a "weak" vehicle. It has to do more with the Safety ratings. Steel/aluminum/alloys are stronger but they don't colapse/absorb shocks as good as plastic does.

Yeah I went to the dealer today to get some work on my 80, while I was there I went and checked the FJC out. I was not impressed with it. To me it looks like a little tonka truck. Its geared toward younger folks. Maybe if I was younger and liked making payments. Right now I give it a thumbs down.

Your perception is 100% correct, but in my honest opnion, and from someone that's been under an FJ while on a lift (getting OME lift kit), they seemed to only put the cheap crap on the front and rear bumpers. I can live with the (light weight plastic) everywhere else they put it, in fact I commend them on it, but they could have at least installed a cheap-metal bumper that would accept a winch - even j33p did that. But having looked very carefully at the underside of the FJ I can say that the FRAME is built tough and I would have no problems pushing it to it's limits. I was actually impressed that they would engineer something (the underside frame and support braces) so well that most of the consumers would never inspect or look at. They could have got away with a lot less. But I don't know how the same management that approved the rugged design, gears, power train, etc,,,also approve the hyundai-style bumpers.

After seeing the FJC in action this weekend at the Badlands, first off, it is very, very capable (of course, the driver has a lot to do with this as well).

Secondly, I actually dug (after the fact) the plastic interior etc. When people were muddy and the truck was muddy, you could see how easily this could be cleaned up in a jiffy. With carpets and cloth and leather, no way this is going to be done.

The plastic also helps keep everything water resistant.

Throw an ARB on the front and call it a day. The rear tire carrier performed well and the rear bumper took a bunch of lumps during the weekend and saw minimal damage.

I really want to see if any manufacturer/vendor out there would make front SAS conversion. That would be great and just cool to see.

I do have to give it to those engineers, they did design a rugged frame. I guess this is one of those vehicles where what you can't see is what you're paying for. This is not a bad thing in my opinion.

the plastic is a crucial part of the soccer-mom repellent strategy.....

the bumpers do make me wonder....hehe...but they don't rattle.

This thing is as tight as you can get on a rough dirt road. The cabin is quiet and big.

It's no car...you know that right away.

It has ALOT of power..very fun and very smooth (mine is 6 speed).

You want leather and wood.....get a jag.

You want a fun impressive beast with great build quality...hunt down an FJ.

Good stuff ..

When you think about it, the Land Cruiser has always been long on steel and short on plastic. Only with the 80 did we start seeing some real plastic...even the 60 interior and exterior was pretty spartan. So maybe because of that the FJ seems a little awkward. One thing I will say is Toyota did a fairly good job of the use of plastics in the 80 interior ( I can gut mine in about 15 minutes) and so if the FJC is anything like that, its a bonus for cleaning, servicing, upgrading etc.
