Of course, I have already read a ton up on this issue but here goes.
I have a 2008 FJ Cruiser SR 4WD.
Unfortunately, I left my keys outside and they have mysteriously disappeared. No problem, I thought--I have another. I've come to learn that my key I originally had was the black Master key and my spare starting key is the grey Valet key with punch hole marking. I made an unlocking key cut from the Master a while ago for surfing.
From what I've read, I'm SOL on trying to get a regular locksmith to program a new key. I believe I need to "virginize" the ECU so that it enters programming mode and I can copy in new master keys.
Does anyone have a good recommendation for a way to best reset my ECU? I asked the stealership, they informed me it would be upwards of $600. Locksmiths in SD were unsure of their ability to do it without the master. I want to get at least two/three master keys in addition to my valet key that way this does not become an issue again. I have seen folks in the LC100 sub discuss that a user named Mauser can do it for their trucks, but I didn't know of anyone who could do it for the FJs. I am an electrical engineer, and I've read up a bit about flashing the ECU via the EEPROM chip to manually set the programming mode, but I didn't know if this was able to be done on the 08's. If this is too big of a project, I don't want to sacrifice my DD and would prefer to leave this to a pro.
If anyone could point me in the right direction for sourcing keyless entry fob/keys and making a new set of master keys, I would be greatly indebted.
