Meeting in Fallbrook at the 76 & I15 Mobil gas station
(Mobil CA-76 Fallbrook, CA 92028) at 4PM Friday, June 12.

We’ll drive in and get settled on a campsite. Day runners are welcome to join up Saturday or Sunday if you can't make it an overnight or weekend. If you're coming up for the day meet us at the campground in the morning before 10. We'll anticipate getting on the trail at 10 sharp.

There is water available but not recommended/tested for drinking - bring plenty of your own drinking water.

It sounds like our last fuel fill up will be in Warner Springs outside of Los Coyotes. I’m bringing some extra fuel.

Cost is $25 per night/per vehicle. They ask you have cash in a white envelope with your name, vehicle and license plate number on it to turn in.

Do not bring in firewood. We are allowed to burn any wood on the ground and there should be plenty.

They can provide us with maps when we arrive - you might also want to check out the Cleveland National Forest Atlas available through the Forest Service Book Store online or at the Forest Service Station in Ramona.

We’ll be on CB channel 21
Simplex Channel 146.490
You might also program in the Palomar Mountain repeater - I think that is a close one.

It’s my first trip to Los Coyotes so I’m hoping some of the veterans can chime in on anything I’m leaving out or other things they recommend. I’m going to have at least one of my boys with me - families and pets are welcome! What do we think about potluck Saturday night?

There are many trails to choose from so depending on the number in attendance we may break into different groups depending on what level of wheeling folks want to do. Wheeling Saturday and Sunday and head out Sunday afternoon. We can hammer out details at Tuesday night’s meeting at Mike’s BBQ in Escondido. See you there!

Is there a meet time and place for those that just want to come up for the day on Saturday?

Days off are locked in and looks like I might have the M416 done in time to have the ARB tent mounted. I will be ready to go Friday so whoever wants to meet up PM me. I will be driving from San Bernardino.

For a fun but not too difficult run I would say take Dead Cow to the Corral and go left. At 4 corners and hop on Dangerous Road and take that to the Lookout. You can then take Rough Road back to camp. A locker is nice but a cruiser can do this without one. If you leave by 10 you can be back by 2-3PM including a leisurely lunch and time to absorb the views from the Lookout.

Marshmellow Hill / Ridge Road / Fire Hill should be easy scenic runs for anyone that wants to keep the wheeling to say a stock 4X4 level.

I have not been on Creek Road or Apian Way since the reservation closed way back when. I would expect lots of overgrowth and associated pinstriping. If you take Creek Road and make it to the Helo Pad that's not a bad place to stop and consider turning around. After that the wheeling gets funner and slower (and harder). Rock sliders used to get a workout. I remember getting through without a locker was very hard even with a flexy well lifted solid axle rig. To put it another way, back in the day if we wanted to go to the back of the reservation it was a 9AM departure at the latest and if everything went perfectly we could get back to camp by 5-6PM. That's a day of solid hard wheeling. Many times things did go wrong, something broke, etc... and we would show up to camp at 11PM. In your 20's that's not necessarily a big deal but I sure am not up for that anymore.

Appian way was fine until you made a left turn into this creek bed. I only went once and the power steering blew on my 89 4runner a ways into the creek bed. Getting turned around was very hard and I was inches from scrapping doors on rocks at many places coming and going through there. I can't wait to do it again! I would say if you go that way take a hike up ahead and check it out before committing. It could have opened up or gotten worse.

I am half way through replacing my 60's AC so I definitely won't make it out for this one even for the day.
