I installed a new double din pioneer stereo this weekend and I'm now trying to button up the installation of the reverse camera. I got it all dialed in on the stereo side, ran the camera wire under the glovebox and down the passenger side to the rear compartment where I am trying to tie into the reverse lights. I got the ground installed no problem, but I'm getting stuck with the reverse power. I jumped it to a direct power source to confirm that it works, and it does, but then I connected it to what I figured was the reverse light power and I am getting nothing. When I looked at all of the lights in the rear light assembly, each of the lights has a white and black wire going into their sides, which I assume is the ground since each light has the same color wire coning into the side of the bulb connector. The center of the reverse light has a red wire with a blue stripe on it, I tapped into that and the camera does not turn on when the shifter is put into reverse.

So there are a couple of options here. Either this is not the correct wire to power the camera, or as the installation directions say, I might need a relay that goes to the reverse light power source and constant power source. The camera didn't come with any sort of relay and I wouldn"t know what to use if I need that option. I'm kind of at a loss at this point and was getting really frustrated finishing this up.

So, can anyone confirm that the red\blue wire is the correct wire to tap into? I attached a picture of the wire that I am referring to for clarity.

Thanks in advance for any info.

There should be 2 wires to the system: the power wire for the camera and then the trigger wire that tells the stereo to show the image. Do you have both hooked up?

The two wires coming off of my camera are ground and power. Both are hooked up. When I connect the red (power) wire to a line that I have running to the back for power outlets, the camera works, but only if I manually go to the camera function in the stereo. It should automatically turn the screen to the camera when power is applied.

When I connect camera red wire to the red/blue wire on the reverse lights, I get nothing. Seems like I'm missing something simple, maybe the connection wasn't solid. I used one of those clips for splicing inline and maybe the connection wasn't good because of how thin the camera power wire is.

Sounds like a bad connection. Use a test light or voltage meter. To trigger the image auto display you will also have to tap the reverse signal from the stereo as well. (at least that is how most decks are)

You can also use a pin on an unused terminal at the R/R. I believe it is for the stock subwoofer or something. See my build:

There is a red wire on each side of the line, the instructions say either one can be hooked up to the reverse lights, doesn't mention hooking it up to the stereo itself. Says connect one and.tape the other off. I will try to post their diagram later

Here are the instructions. Any thoughts?

Just realized that picture was upside down. Here's the correct view

Yes, just red wire to reverse or ACC power. ACC power will allow the camera to work when ever the ignition is on, reverse wire will allow the camera to work only when in reverse.

After you get that situated, you need to also address the (radio/stereo/deck) image signal wire. This prompts the video image to appear on the screen automatically when you engage reverse. If you power your camera at the rear to ACC and not the reverse wire, you will also be able to select the camera image from the stereo in any gear manually. (if your deck has that option)

Crap, I already buttoned the whole dash back up. I will look at the installation manual and check for that wire. What do I connect it to?

You will need to connect that wire to the reverse signal. See my thread. It is located at the drivers kick panel. I would tell you the color wire, but my ass is color blind. Just put in reverse and use a test light to confirm. Or, see the EWD.

My power source at the back:

Ugh.....so I have to remove the dash panel and stereo again. Bummer, I should have looked into that wire before putting it all back together.

So did you dig into that wire from the backside of the harness connector and splice in? Wiring harnesses like that scare me:)

Success, all dialed in and working how it's supposed to. Thank you for all of your help and timely answers. If you're ever in the Pismo Beach area (Turf and Surf??), I owe you a beer or three 🤙🤙

My pleasure, I try and make it down there 2 times a year now. Glad it all works and hope to see you one day. Enjoy the new camera, I love having it. Going to do a front one soon.

It really helps trailing solo, as you do not have to keep getting out to see if you are going off a cliff or going to hit a tree/rock while in a tight spot.

Right on, didn't realize you are in CA. Hit me up if you're in town and want a wheeling partner, if you ever need a local place to wrench on your rig, if you're looking for a new trail to checkout, etc.

Thanks again

I was at a hospital Underground and I didn't realize I backed into a concrete column pissed me off. Damage was very minor but it wasn't to my mind Cruiser was just a daily driver. Every car every flipping car that ever manufactured as long as the technology exists should always have a reverse camera.

They make these new technology things hanging off the doors to help see behind you. There's even one in the inside, right in the middle on the windshield.

They're made of glass and highly reflective........
