Time to uh, shoot or get off the...spot on the pig project.

I'm going to be looking for 62 axles, preferably FF rear, and a NV4500 for the pig. I can find them elsewhere and spend a lot of money on shipping, can you guys tell me good places to look locally or within borrowed pickup truck distance?

Glad to hear you are getting serious. The 62's never came with full floating rear axles in the states. The only place I know of to get them are places like Spector, Man-a-fre or one of the Canadian importers. Bayshore Trucking in Sparks used to have nv4500's, they are an authorized rebuilder for them, so they usually have a few lying around (or used to).

Yeah, up until recently I wasn't sure if I'd still have a job this year so I wasn't spending money. The bad news is, the money I didn't spend was in the market.:meh:

PM Krokar...
He's the local LC parts guy.
Try www.crusierparts.net as well. I think I saw some FF rears on there.

Thanks Jack, I talked to Bayshore this morning and they do still handle the NV4500. They seemed very helpful.

On a completely unrelated note, does anyone have a rebuildable NV4500 core that they would like me to dispose of?

Andre/DieselCruiserHead has one.

I think his is on 60 axles.

BTW-An 80 series rear axle would make a decent swap into an FJ62. It's wide, but you could make it work. The front would not, because the steering arm is on the bottom of the knuckle, and the one available high steer option is imaginative but not really right. So it makes getting the steering right really difficult and puts the tie rod down low in an unprotected spot.

A better but fairly expensive option, would be a D60 high pinion front modified for width, and an 80 rear.

I gave all of this a bunch of thought before springing over my FJ60 and for simplicity went with FJ62 axles, with long term D60s not ruled out.

I think EricV has a build going with a 60 body and an 80 chassis.

Lowtide did the same, only he used an early 80 series and swapped in a manual transmission and split case transfer. that one he actually got together and finished.

Lots of cool and funky swaps out there.

My thinking on a lot of this has changed with my FJ62. It has significantly more power than a 60, and runs down the highway really well. That 3FE motor is a really good motor for swaps and trades, since it has stand alone EFI, AND will bolt up to a traditional Land Cruiser manual transmission bellhousing. That opens the door to all kinds of swaps that are already worked out in the Land Cruiser world.

The later 80 series while wonderful vehicles in every way and the best stock Cruiser ever, really does not take well to swaps and trades, and essentially forces you to run a stock driveline.

It sounds like this build is going the GM/Chevy direction anyway, which makes all of this moot.

Another question for the locals...

I'm considering a NP203 doubler on the NV4500. If I understand correctly, all that is required is to drill and tap the NP203 case to mate to the NV4500, and a shortened output shaft from the NV4500. If I've got that right, is there a good local shop that can do the work?
