Bryan...you are right. The complaints I heard from people were as follows and with my take:
1- hated clamshell doors as it made it hard to get in and out: I called BS...I thought it gave more access to rear seat area. You have to remember to shut rear door first but thought it was a trick system.
2- not enough room in back seats for adults: REALLY? You buy all of your vehicles based on what someone else that might ride in there once or twice a year thinks while they mooch off of your gas to go to lunch, work or dinner? My front seat was always large enough... haha. That being said.....I had sat in rear seat and it was plenty big for trips of an hour or two for someone my size. Maybe not having a window to roll down made them feel weird. Again...my front seat has a window I could care less if you are able to roll one down in rear.
3- Blind spots to rear with spare tire and C Pillars: Learn how to adjust your mirrors properly and use them with both driving and backing and you will never notice any blind spots. I never did.
I thought the FJC had a very comfortable interior....stereo ( i had one with 9 speakers and woofer) was good....tailgate never bothered me to not be able to open from dash. It got decent gas mileage and even with the 34" tires, full steel underbody skid plates, full steel bumpers front and rear with swingouts....steel sliders...Baja Rack on top, 12k winch in front bumper, heavy springs and shocks from Old Man Emu with 3" lift kit......still got better mileage than my UZJ100 does now with only tires and bumpers/sliders....no skids. The engine has good power....and with the ATRAC and Rear Locker both I could go about anywhere I wanted.
My only complaints....
The bumperettes (plastic corner pieces front and rear) were easy to knock off and held with snaps only.
If you get a tow hitch ensure it is Toyota version as it fits higher for better departure angle...the rear facade for bumper will be notched where hitch comes through. If not...southeast toyota will just put on an aftermarket that hangs a couple inches lower. Frame is already PRE DRILLED for skid plates, sliders and tow hitch so that is nice.
Install a Tuffy center console....tint the windows dark....adjust your mirrors properly....and do the SCUBA MOD on your breathers for tranny, diff, elocker, etc.....and you wont need anything else for a while.
If you need anything let me know....I think my old build thread on BLUE FORUM is still there if you want to check it out.
