I am fairly new to the Lx/Lc world, so please bear with me until I am up to speed. After putting over 150k miles on a Supra that makes over twice the stock power, and not ever having one single problem, I figured that a Toyota SUV was the way to go. However, from reading the message board I am a little unnerved by the number and variety of problems people seem to have with their Lc/Lx’s. I hope that many of these problems are attributed to the extreme use these vehicles are subjected to. So far I have put over 50k miles on a 99 that I bought with 50k miles on it, and have been pretty satisfied. I am surprised to hear that Toyota put a week front differential in the 98-99 Lc. I assumed that after I loaded up the diff in my supra with over 600hp and dumped the clutch countless times while on slicks, that the one thing Toyota knows how the design and build is a differential.

My novice questions are as follows:
  • While in low range gears the transfer case makes a noticeable wine, is this normal? Does the transfer case have it own lubricating system, or does it share transmission fluid with the transmission?
  • How much torture can I expose my 99 front diff to, until I can expect some problems?
  • How many people have replaced their starter contacts more than once? I hear of a lot of people doing it at around 40-60k miles, and then never having a problem with it again.
  • What kind of problems can I anticipate with a 99 LX with over 100k miles?

1) Yes, a noticeable whine is normal while the T-case is in Lo. The T-case does not share ATF fluid with the tranny, it has its own reservoir of fluid.

2) The Supra Differential is quite strong, I know. But keep in mind its a 3600 lb car vs. a 5500 lb SUV. Unfortunately, the IFS allows for "wheel hops" when off-road. Try to avoid doing that. Seems like greater than 95% of the people with early front differentials haven't broke them yet. Those aren't bad odds.

EDIT: You got me curious, so I even started a poll for you on broken differentials.

3) Starter contacts seem to need replacing at about the 80k mile mark. I would expect to replace them every 80k miles, though it is really based on the number of "engine starts." Since most owners have less than 160k miles on their LC, that would explain why they've only replaced them once.

I greatly appreciate the feed back. One thing I enjoy most about my Lx/Lc is the community of owners. The supra community is terrible; I guess its part of the competitive race nature.

I really think the 100 series will end up being one of the most reliable Cruisers made, my 2000 has cost me nothing in 30k, besides personal mods and oil changes. Pretty much the same story the the 99 LX.

I EXPECT to replace the starter and alt sometime in the 100-130k range.......and its the same with any other toyota.

Yup, the Landcruiser should live up to your expectations as far as reliability. My cost of maintenance/repair is around $.01 per mile although it is elevated to $.028/mile right now (just spent $800 in tires on Thursday). That is through 49000 miles of my usage and 127000 total vehicle miles. Runs smooth as silk, holds a boatload of people/gear and goes places similar sized vehicles don't.

I hope to have a Mark IV Supra one day too. What BPU's do you have on yours?

Welcome Nospell!

Oh man, don't get me started! Glance at my Ignorant Newbie Seeking Advice thread for a brief history of my 98 LC and those that came before. The long and short: I have 196K miles and 1 failure...a fuel pump. One window button doesn't work and another works but is..ummm...quirkey. That's it. My vehicle has been bullett-proof............

How many here have had the starter contacts go?

Ditto here. I did mine at 124,000 just because....

I'm happy I did it. I'm alot more familiar with the engine now.
