Hello all. I have a 2.4 litre LJ78 out in Argentina and it's gone through a few heads. Am wondering if the 3 litre diesel engine is much better? There seems to be a few differences as it's a 1993 or 1994 model rather than the 1992 that I have currently.
Or is it not going to be a much tougher engine? Pretty much all the cars I have seen have had the 2.4 2LT engine.
Muchas gracias!

3l is much better - are you looking at swapping trucks or changing the engine? As long as you keep up with your maintenance the 3L will do alot better than the 2.4l. The 3l can still crack heads but are not as prone as the 2.4. With the 3l its a case of 'may crack a head' where as with the 2.4 it is more 'when will the head crack next'. You can take other steps to help prevent a cracked head like install an intercooler, fit an electric fan, drive sympathetically etc
Do a search as there is ALOT of dicussions of the pro and cons...

Regards
Mark

brace yourself for crushers comments... ;)

i was just going to get another truck. I've been through two heads on the current LJ78, one which was skimmed by hand in Bolivia (impressive) and the other which needed replacing. I need another truck and the old one will be relegated to lighter duty. Just wondering if the KZ will be up to it if I should save up more money really and get an 80 or 100 series.
Thanks!

Really, don't waste your time with the light duty Cruisers.

The heavy duty ones are far superior if that is an option for you.

The 3L and the 3.0 litre 1KZT-E are different engines. The KZ is supposed to be quite a bit more reliable than the L family, but it's been a mixed bag here in Canada with the imported JDMs.

If you can get a hold of a 3L(2.8liter) put that in, quite underpowered but will last forever, or if you want more power put the turbo, manifold etc off the 2lte onto the 3L. Just not sure of the availability of the 3L in your country.
