Hello, I'm looking at upgrading the current 2-point seatbelts on my LJ77 back bench to 3-point seatbelts. I took off the trim piece and see there is not a pre welded in nut. However, there is a premade hole not used for trim clips. Photo attached circled in yellow. Can this be used to anchor a should bolt? The metal seems really thin but wondering if there is a way to brace it? Has anyone successfully upgraded their LJ77/78 back seats to 3-point seatbelts?

Thanks so much,
DCCruiser

I converted my LJ78 rear seats to 3 point, and your right, the metal work is thin because the is no reinforcements.

I used seat belt spreader plates like used in race cars for 4 point harnesses. I also have a rear roll bar/dog guard which mounts to where the 3rd row seats fitted and have tied them into the seat belt mounts.

Ash, thanks for the reply and info. Assume you need the roll bar/ dog guard to secure the seat belt mounts?

Because I used the spreader plates I don’t think the roll bar/dog guard was needed but I added it later for a bit of peace of mind.

KZJ78 came with these from factory....
This is true and so did the later LJ78s but those of us with early ones have to suffer with lap belts or retrofit 3point belts. Lucky the hole is there for the mounting point, and the trim is also marked so it’s easy to line it all up.

Yup, I don't have them either. Upgrade has been on my list too, so this is good info!

If you find functional KZJ78 seatbelt retractors with bad/poor condition webbing, you can swap the webbing, top anchor, and male buckle for cheap and without any tools. You just need to buy webbing (68" +-10") with compatible clip and top anchor. Cheap way to switch colors too.
