The global pandemic is slowing down 79 progress a little.

I did get the FT intake manifold cleaned at the only remaining good radiator shop in Austin. I had made some progress cleaning the carbon goo out of it, but they got it shiny and clean.

I asked him if they hot tanked it, and they only replied that they had used ‘other methods.’ Proprietary secrets, I suppose.

Now off to @roma042987 for some vapor hone goodness.

Yes, yes, yes....all works in progress.

Looking good Dr G

Same here Cim.... Marlin gave us a clinic on the uses at Tucker74’s expense. I use mine all the time just to figure out thread pitch if I’m replacing hardware, or with my new to me 80 trying to figure out what wrong bolt the previous shade tree mechanic used.

I was about to say the same thing. Very cool seeing the legend at work. It would probably be wise for me to have a set of my own as well.

Saturday night. Ahhhh.

I see no mess. I have no idea what you’re taking about.

I just made the ‘DHL recycling zone’ over in the other corner. That’s the extent of the ‘cleaning’. Though I did wrap the h55 I sent @SNLC in about 300 wraps of extra Partsouq bubble wrap before my kids could stomp the bubbles out of existence.

In actual progress I got the injectors in. These things are freakin’ expensive. I held onto them with two hands. Injector #4 was a tight fit; I had to tap it in with a rubber mallet. All the others slid into place easily.

I also got some sexy nitrile gloves that are accelerator free. I’m allergic to the chemical accelerators in the rubber manufacturing process- not latex, not nitrile, not neoprene...but three of the damn chemicals used on the manufacturing process.

As I make my living as a surgeon I spend the better part of my waking hours wearing gloves of some sort, so finding nonsterile work gloves has been a pain in the ass. Here’s to hoping they work. I’m not itchy and rashy...yet.

Thermostat and water inlet on, with a shmear of water/coolant formulated Permatex. thermostat gasket part number, not pictured here is 16346-66020. I used the one out of my engine overhaul gasket set (04111-17020).

Water bypass pipe on next, with a quickly spray painted support bracket. New parts and hardware are a joy.

Exhaust studs are next. I need to grab a set of external torx bits. Yes, I could just double nut it but I’d rather do it right.

All in all a good night.

Man, Tucker, tonight isn't going the way I wanted here. Glad you're in an Airstream far way because I've been yelling naughty words all night.

I got the exhaust manifold on, but of course didn't read the FSM...the turbo is supposed to go onto the manifold FIRST. Fudge. It'll fit if I unbolt the water bypass pipe.

Start getting the MMP 1HDFTE turbo ready to go. The turbo water pipes went on fine but....of all the thousands of parts here I don't have the two turbo oil pipe studs. And I've had the turbo in a box here for a year and didn't look it over fully. More naughty words. Ordered the studs.

Can't find the third flange bolt that holds the turbo onto the turbo stay. This is getting old. Ordered it.

I went to put on the water pump. Pump: check. 5 bolts 91511-B0830: check. 2 nuts (shut it, Tucker) 90179-08040: check.

Two long flange bolts: old and dirty. Looking up part number: can't friggin' find it. And I CAN'T put an entirely new water pump with all new hardware and two old dirty bolts. So now I gotta go find those and order them. Fark. Calling @Onur...

OK. Let's do something different. So I grab my old trustworthy Milwaukee 3/8" driver and start wire wheeling the alternator and frame to engine mounts. Right as I get them clean enough for chassis saver, I smell something horrible...smoke is coming out of the Milwaukee and it don't go no more. FAAAAAAACK.

I'm going home.

I think I found a bolt that fits: 91511-60860, superseded to 91511-B0860. Let's see. Ordered anyway.

I was going to do that but decided to just get them rebuilt. On a diesel I did last year though cost for new vs rebuilt was within $25 an injector so went that route.

Get a Metabo, it will be the last grinder you ever buy. If you get the right one, it has a clutch built in an it can't kick back. ;)

Cheers

I hate frustrating days like that..... I have thought about getting a "special toolbox" for moments like that with the proper tools and equipment... Bourbon in the upper drawers...

Per my usual routine, I did take a bunch of pictures.

I’m pretty proud of myself for my OCD. I couldn’t find the part number for the pedal pads, and I went back to the poverty pack thread and found it. So I’m glad I’m posting pics of everything.

Exhaust manifold nuts. Side note: tightened the studs to a little more than hand tight with an E6 external torx driver.

I’ll make a blanking plate for the EGR system and put the EGT probe there. Once I order the missing stud.

MMP 1HDFTE turbo, fresh rebuild to stock settings. I am using an FTE turbo because 1. It’s sitting on the shelf and 2. I loved @davegonz ’s setup using this turbo.
