If you were to use a hinge like this:

with the thought that the lid could be removed, how would one keep the lid from sliding off the hinges on a slope?

The struts may provided some lateral support but may not be enough to keep the hinges from separating. Normally this type of hinge is used vertically.

Any other hinge ideas? Maybe something with a cotter ping that keeps it together.

An alternative to the cotter pin could be to weld a nut just past where the hinge would slide out. It would need to be low enough to clear so that the hinge could slide past it. Then screw a bolt into it with another nut or lock washer on it, which would act as a keeper, preventing the hinge from moving sideways. You'd only need one on any set of hinges.

ive see a guy use these hinges on another m416 what you do is mount them towrds them self to were you canot just slide it off. you weld the piece's to a removable plate and bolt the plate's to the trailer .. at liest one hinge .. that way just the one hing was your removable "lock" you could weld the other side.. id weld both lid pices and plate both trailer pieces.. that way they were both adjustable, incase of binding..
here is the link to the build were the guy welded these hinges to a tab..
can you post up a link of were you found those hinges ?

Yep, weld-on with the hinges pointing in opposite directions is another method. If you go that route, you probably want to use the one with the zerk on the end so that it can still be lubed easily.

Just drill a hole next to the hinge on the side it slides towards, insert a bolt, and put a nut on the other side. Use a bolt that will extend past the nut, washer and lockwasher so that it can be drilled for a cotter pin. That way it can't be removed from the outside, adding security.

i use those for my tailgate hinge. for the lid hinge, i used 3 SS HD door hinges, with needle bearings. its stout, doesnt flex when lid opens & closes, and is easily removable.
