I'm finally geting at my master bathroom - spurred on by a failed appraisal for a refi. I've got an American Standard whirlpool tub that I bought for this about 8 years ago. Yea, I know - alot of life intervened.

Anyway, I finally got the surround built and it's all plumbed up. So I turned on the pump. Everything looks good, except a leak at the motor & pump. Looking closer, it appears to be the bushing/seal where the motor shaft goes into the pump. It's a pretty steady drip. And of course this thing is way out of warranty.

Anybody have any experience with these? Could the seal just be dried up and may swell now and fix itself? If not, can it be repaired, or do I need to look into replacing the entire pump unit?

I pulled the motor & pump out of it last night, but can't figure out how to get the pump off the shaft. Split the pump expecting to find something in there, but it looks like it might just be a press fit.

I'd be willing to bet there is a forum somewhere that deals specifically with whirlpool tubs, might give you a simple answer. I would not be surprised if it was a press fit.

On some whirlpool pumps the impeller theads onto the shaft. It should be a 2 peice ceramic seal so it won't fix it's self. If you have the pump number you can order the seal, It should come with installation instructions. It should be a press fit.

Yup - stuck a screwdriver into the motor fan and got it to twist off. Got the seal replaced at a local shop. I got it back in and have been running it for about half an hour now and no leaks!:bounce2:
