Strickly comparing fuel economy. A HDJ81 vs the 4 cylinder Delica diesel (don't know too much yet about delica's so can't quote an exact model).

From this board, it would seem most people are getting on average 20-30mpg or 9-14L per 100k for their HDJ81's. From a fairly brief search and read on a delica board, it seems that they get around the same for a 4 cylinder turbo diesel.

Now I don't know what the weights are, but I would assume the 81 weighs more than a delica. How can the mileage be the same?

Just wondering what people here have to say as I really want the 81, but don't know if that's the smartest choice for me right now.

But if the Delica's aren't any better with fuel then I'd definately go for the 81.

My advice from Japan and junk yard trips. Buy the Land Cruiser. You very very rarely see any Land Cruiser in the Junk yards, but you'll see plenty of Delica vans - Mitsubishi cars are everywhere in the yards here. I don't know what it is but they do break a lot. Toyota is a better made vehicle. I love the looks of the Delicas I see but would never buy one.

just my humble opinion.

30 mpg is the exception rather than the norm for an HDJ81. Most of the Aussies and most here who keep meticulous records driving in real world conditions get 12-14 l / 100 km. I think the Delica would do a bit better than that, but the 1HD-T is known to be a very frugal engine. Still, even 22 mpg (imp) is amazing in a 2500 kg vehicle with the cruisers capabilities. However, I have found that some of the numbers posted are, shall we say, optimistic. In heavy off road going the 81 can consume up to and over 18 l / 100 km, or on multiple short trips in cold weather. My absolute best so far is 25.89 m per imp gallon, just under 11 l / 100 km. The 1HDT seems to really like driving at partial boost - around 5 psi - then it's very noticeable that fuel economy goes way up. But it's hard to do that on Canadian Freeways. It limits your top speed to around 90 kph on the flats which is pretty slow. If I speed up to around 100 indicated (108 actual) then economy goes down but not by much. That's about as slow as I can tolerate for long distance travel and in 10's of thousands of km has not got me a second glance through countless speed traps as at that speed I'm in the slow lane almost all the time.

My best has been 10.5km/l or 9.52l/100km, mostly in-town driving.

But that was trying VERY hard.:)

If you really want the 81 then just get it as you probably would not regret it whereas if you get the Delica when you really wanted the HDJ you would regret it from the day one.

I guess it largely depends on what you want to do with the vehicle. If you want plenty of space for all of the occupants (7/8 passengers), then you should opt for the Mitsubishi.

But if you want a VERY capable off-road vehicle with seating for five or 7/8 (you can always add the 3rd-row seats, too) and the parts to come by a lot easier, then I would get the 81.

Personally, as much as I love minivans, I would not even think twice about keeping my HDJ.

My $0.02.
