My brother in law has a 93 FZJ and he can't get it registered in KS (so far) since the VIN tag is missing a screw/rivet on one side. They are saying its been tampered with and there's no way for them to know if that's the correct VIN tag.

He is meeting with a trooper to get another inspection, but if it fails that one, it will never be able to be registered in KS.

Has anyone ever gone through something similar?

Any advice?

I don't know enough about this stuff to give correct advice.

Thanks for any help.

what tag are they looking at?

I've brought 3 vehicles in from out of state and each time they checked the vin tag on the dash by viewing it through the windshield. it took them all but 5 seconds. this was at the inspection station at the white lakes mall in south topeka...

Its the VIN tag on the dash through the window that's missing a rivet on one side. They're saying its been tampered with and won't register it.

EDIT: He went down to the Highway Patrol to talk to them, so I guess its showtime.

There might be a 6M1 Green FZJ80 being parted out real soon...

I can't offer any real advice other than captain obvious stuff...

was this a recent purchase? I recall hearing your bro in law had one several months ago. I'm assuming vin numbers are matching the rest of the rig. and I'm assuming the rivet was missing when he picked it up...did the seller offer any explanation?

What's he want for it? :D

Well, he got it registered thanks to the Japanese VIN stamped on the frame. I guess they're gonna rivet the plate back down for him to avoid future issues.

Same thing happened to me when I brought back my 40 from Wisconsin. Highway Patrol said that the VIN plate had been tampered with because it had pop rivets holding it on. I was quick to point out that the frame numbers matched the plate, and that I used to own a 79 FJ40 that had the
Vin plate pop riveted also. They basically called me a liar, and a woman that was checking it out also said it wasn't a Land Cruiser. Oh yah, SHE really knew what she was talking about! Anyway, another inspector came out and I showed him the Vin Number on the frame, and he made a new Vin plate and riveted it on with one of their rivets, and said it was good to go. They had me worried for a couple of hours.

You'll be stuck doing what kruzinboots mentioned. There are a couple locations. The "secret" location known to law enforcement is just that, a secret. Maybe Mike C. or Jason can find out and share that info with you.

Silly wabbit, there are no "secrets" :D

The source of the problem is this state, using such an antiquated system, and the oblivious people doing the work. When I got here the lady didn't know where the vin on the engine was and I had a big-ol-fat windshield crack at eye level for the driver. She didn't even see that. Needless to say, it wouldn't have passed Texas inspection.

Glad to hear things finally worked out.
