I got back from a few days and 1200 miles.

1191 miles to be exact and 65 gallons of gas. 18+ mpg*. I take 7-8 week long trips a year and my average mpg is roughly the same. Am I just one slow ass driver?

*stock tires, med-heavily loaded, avg 70-75 mph hwy.

That stream and fly fishing look like pure bliss.


I have never seen better than 14mpg pre 35s and 12.5mpg since. This is not the first I have heard in the 18 mpg range. WTF! I want that kind of mileage out of mine. Well done Mike.

Give Laurel Lakes a try..The turn off is off of Sherwin Creek Rd. Haven't brought the cruiser up there yet but have packed poles on my XR400 and fished there many times. LOT's of brookies up there..Not huge, but fun none the less and way better than stockers! Also check out Lower Rock Creek. Have fun ( I am way jealous!)

Thanks....I usually fish the Owens cause it is open year round and have had great luck...gotta get some issues taken care of before the trip...If not the Subie will get the job of taking me to Mammoth cause we will not be missing this trip...

On this trip, on the second day, we day-tripped 6-7 miles in and fished a remote stretch of water. Initially a 4x4 road showed access that would have made the hike in 2-3 miles, but the road was closed.

You wanna share??? or is a secret?? and if so I totally understand...been going up there since I was 4 months old but just stared fly fishing last year...

I fish the entire state of California, North California, Central California and South California. Sometimes you catch a lot, sometimes you catch a little, that's the way it is. I generally don't target stocked fish, although just about every river/lake has a stocking program of some sort. I also release 99% of my catch.

The entire Mammoth/Bishop region is basically a put and take fishery. To do well, take a look at the regions stocking schedule. For more quality fish, look to larger lakes like Crowley, South Lake, Sabrina, Saddlebag, Grant, etc... For even better fishing, a hike of as little as a mile can bring great rewards.

The perch bite at Crowley should be pretty good right now and the E. Walker has a good flow. The Upper San Joaquin has a lot of quality fish, but the water is a little thin sometimes. The Upper and Lower Owens are both productive, with the lower flowing in runoff conditions.

I've got a float tube you can borrow.

Sorry to hijack your thread...but your fishing knowledge is impressive...Like I said earlier just started fly fishing last year and have been spoiled so far...Got a good buddy who is a guide so he takes me where the fish are ...I fished for my first time by myself in Colorado this spring...and I actually caught something other than the bottom..

we will have to take this offline or to a get together sometime...thanks a bunch for your offer on the tuibe...I just really like the whole wading aspect...my buddy has a boat and last year he took us out on Crowley...not quite the same..but we did hook a couple of big ones...

My knowledge is normal/average at the best, but I make up for it with a lot of time on the water.

I didn't realize you were a fly-fisherman. We should get a trip together. Brad (Bpenn) is also tosses flies, so he might be interested as well. I'll be fishing the Kern just about every weekend until the end of summer (a mixture of backpacking and car camping). How about a weekend trip to the Kern?

Yeah, I agree. No doubt there are guys out there who are 'guru' status, but mkfour knows a thing or two.
