This past Sunday, My buddy, his wife and I went on a leisurely Sunday drive to Joshua Tree's Black Eagle Road. Black Eagle Road begins about 6.5 miles north of the Cottonwood Visitor Center, this dead-end dirt road runs along the edge of Pinto Basin, crosses several dry washes, and then winds up through canyons in the Eagle Mountains. The first 9 + miles of the road are within the park boundary. Around the 12th mile there is a large rock blocking the trail that prevented u from driving to the mines. At this point you in desert wilderness, BLM land. Since we could not get to the mines, we made the return trip back and ended up doing a bit of rock climbing. the rock formations are right off the paved road close to the Cottonwood Entrance. Click on link for pics. Hope you enjoy the picks. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v228/bohemianjsr/Off Road Trips/Joshua Tree Black Eagle Rd/

Looks like a nice place to visit. Thanks for sharing.

the other end of that road is called Old gold mine rd./ old dale road. I have driven it from 29 palms to the park a few time, It is the only place in Ca that i have seen the illusive desart tortes. Plan on the drive taking about 6hr this will give you time to check out the mines, they are pretty cool.

Ian, yeah I want to check out Old Dale Road next, Black Eagle Road did lead to mines as well. For some reason the BLM folks don't want people venturing out on vehicles...I gues you could hike it in from there...or ride a mountain bike.
