this is the $500 dollar truck we are thinking of going and getting. I wanted to do a little research on the issues he had listed (bucking) and found that it looks like he did quite a bit of investigative work before deciding to sell the truck - as far as i can tell this issue is unresolved and I was wondering what your thoughts were:

also, if the 'choke is broken and needing to be fixed to drive it home' could that just be the choke cable? i think that is an easy fix.

Pull the dizzy of your truck just in case and bring it along,
Sounds like he identified the problem, just could not find the solution to the problem.

Me? I'd head out with a trailer and worry about fixing it at home instead of on the side of the highway. I'd recommend you just rent or borrow a suitable truck and go get it. Sure, it's money for rental plus fuel but in the long view it might be cheaper than getting bent over by a mechanic or tow truck driver in the middle of nowhere.

At the very least see if you can buy Jim for a weekend to ride out with you and make a few quick fixes so you can drive it back. :D

Oh, if you take your '87 distributer I think you'll need to take the ignitor too as the connectors are different (might be wrong on this one though; check on SOR's web site and see if each year uses the same parts).

Good luck with what ever choice you make,
Nick

You can borrow my trailer, but you'll need a full size tow vehicle to pull a FJ60.

Me? I would bring my universal carb and ignition system and vacuum caps. If I could not find & correct the problem quickly (unlikely), then in one hour the carb, dissy & ignition would be changed out and the bulk of desmogging would be done. Then I'd drive it home.

The bucking has to be fuel or emissions or ignition or bad ground from engine to battery. That's all little stuff. If it runs good sometimes, then the engine is not broke, and if it drives, then the driveline isn't broken.

Oh, the choke does not need fixed to drive. The choke needs to be on to start, then off to run. This can be done manually underhood. choke cable can be disconnected if cable is bad.

I spoke with the guy over the weekend after he completely bypassed the EGR. He drove it hard for 30 minutes in stop and go traffic and 45 on the highway between 65-70 (2900 RPM's max) and had no issues through that entire time. I am confident from that experience that he's got it nailed down.
