Of the three, which brand has the best beginner Mountain bike? Say I got a budget of less than $500.

brand new i would say Jamis. they put together a pretty decnt whole package. But if you scour different sites like JensonUSA, or Nashbar, bicycleBlowout, etc there is a wide range to be found if you are like me, and dont mind getting a bike that has been sitting in a warehouse for two or three years.

For a brand new bike I would look at the Fuji's and Jamis bikes, you get a pretty good build for a decent price.

Also check out the mtbr.com classifieds, you can find local bikes owned by people who ride for sport, typically better condition.

Giant makes a great bike, I have the Trance X and it is great fun. You can get a sport level hardtail pretty cheap and it will have a good spec on it.

Look for something that can be upgraded, if you can find one that already has disk brakes that would be a start, and look for rapid fire shifters.

500 bones will get you a very nice used bike on craigslist. why buy something less that's new when you could pick up a high end bike that's only a couple years old on CL?
