is shedding too much dangerous?

Hi mud.

I'm a little concerned about my Malamute. because of the "wierd" weather we're getting here (cold snaps followed by heat waves), my malamute has shed a full winter coat 5 times in the last 4 months.

is this unhealthy for her? should i be giving her some form of suppliment to counteract any deficiencies she'll have by producing so much hair?

cheers

Must be a new dog to you. Malamutes and huskies shed constantly, not seasonally. Get used to it.

no, not a new dog.

i'm aware of the constant "light" shedding, but the last couple of years (how long i've had her) she would go through a couple of weeks in spring where she loses pretty much all her undercoat. it comes out in clumps, and and then it's back to light shedding, and she looks like she's lost 10kg (due to less undercoat)

this year the undercoat has been lost and regrown completely 5 times.

Our snow dog pretty much does one shed like yours. It takes like 2 months to complete, but it's only one time. I would wonder about something metabolic like thyroid from what your describing. Any other issues you've noticed? Weight loss, drinking a lot, peeing a lot?

Hopefully someone with more experience with this kind of dog will chime in. :D

Neighbors complained about thier dog doing this. I groomed thier dog with an animal care kit that I got with my SE100 STIHL wet/dry vac. It is basically a rubber curry comb connected to the end of the hose. You would not believe how much hair comes off that dog. I did it every two weeks or so. now the dog comes to my shop and sits next to my wet dry vac. If I do not groom him, he pisses on it.

I was told by a vet that shedding has more to do with the amount of sunlight in the day rather than the temperature. Long nights = loong hair. It maybe a myth.

I just bought a "Ferminator" comb for our two goldens, rakes a lot of hair out of them. I did run the vacuum on one of the dogs, he wouldn't get out of the cruiser when I was trying to vacuum it. I tried a couple nozzles, must be I need the rubber curry nozzle, I didn't get much.

My chesapeake's coat got really thin last year. I took her to the vet and turns out it was fleas.

I assumed that because she spent a lot of time in the water that any fleas would drown. Wrong.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you see other signs of sickness. I have a really long haired Australian Shepherd, his "pants " fur is almost ten inches long. I can pretty much fill up a grocery store bag with fur any time I want. I doubt that your dog lost all of his undercoat. Maybe a lot, but not all. Undercoats work both ways as insulators on dogs. There is so much fur in there, that I don't think you would ever be able to rake it all out. If you can and your dog is losing it's fur, then I would consult the vet , because something else is going on.

thanks guys.

i'm not worried about her losing all her fur or anything, just hoping that growing all that extra undercoat wasn't going to cause a deficiency in anything.

looks like she has to go to the vets anyway. unrelated issue. she's off her food (something i never thought possible. she'd normally eat the german shepard if he sat still long enough) and has pretty nasty diarheer (spelling).
