Date: 09/25/2008 BLUERIBBON COALITION ACTION ALERT!
Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,
Inyo National Forest Announces Field Trips - OHV Users Should Attend
Marty Hornick, Trail Program Coordinator and Travel Management Project Co-Leader for the Inyo National Forest, just emailed me their Travel Management -Route Designation Update for September 2008. He wanted me to pass a copy along to all our subscribers in California and Nevada and let them know about the upcoming Field Trips they have planned for October 2008.
A couple key points he asked me to make are that they are holding these trips before the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) comes out, so that folks can learn how they will be analyzing certain routes in various alternatives. Their DEIS isn't due to be released until early 2009.
The field trips should be pretty educational and help folks be able to comment more effectively once the DEIS is released. These trips are not intended to be public comment sessions.
They are also asking folks who plan on attending to RSVP. This is really important because it allows the folks at the Forest Service office to make sure they have enough staff, materials and vehicles on hand.
IF YOU ARE GOING TO GO, LET THEM KNOW!
A copy of the information is pasted below. Please take a couple of minutes to read it over and pass it on. It includes information on who to contact to let them know you want to attend.
JUST REMEMBER, PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT IS CRUCIAL TO KEEP RECREATION AREAS OPEN, PLEASE GET INVOLVED!
Thanks in advance for your support,

TRAVEL MANAGEMENT - ROUTE DESIGNATION
Inyo National Forest - An Update
September 2008
Catch up on Current Status: It has been a busy summer! In between wildfires and mudslides, we have been working hard on developing the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for our Travel Management planning process. We have experienced some unexpected delays, and are running behind where we had hoped to be at this point.
Timeline for the Future: Currently it looks like we will have the DEIS out for public review and comment this winter. We know that this is not ideal, as you may want to review the draft transportation system by visiting specific routes. We recommend that you try to visit the routes that you are most concerned about in the next few months, as winter weather may make the routes inaccessible during the comment period. Route maps (the October 2007 Proposed Action and inventory) are available on our website at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/projects/ohvroute5.shtml#stepfour
Join us for a Field Trip: Meanwhile, to be able to continue dialogue with you and help you better understand what you will see in the DEIS, we would like to invite you to join us on a field trip this fall. We will be hosting two public field trips to different parts of the Inyo National Forest to actually look at specific routes and describe the different management strategies which would be applied to those routes in the DEIS alternatives. Dates, times and meeting locations for the field trips are as follows:
North End - Saturday October 18 - 9:00am - 1:00pm
Meet at the pullout across from the chain-up area on Highway 203 (Mammoth Lakes exit) just west of US 395.
South End - Saturday October 25 - 9:00am - 1:00pm
Meet at the intersection of Highway 168 West and Buttermilk Road (7S01), approximately 7 miles west of Bishop.
Please RSVP if you plan to attend one of the field trips or have special needs for accessibility by calling Nancy Upham at 760-873-2427, or by email nupham@fs.fed.us. High clearance vehicles are recommended. Please let Nancy know if you will have room in your vehicle and can help with carpooling. Bring water and snacks, wear sturdy shoes, and dress for changeable fall weather.
