Heyo,
Figure I give another whirl at forums. I came across this one by stumbling across Cruisin' M101CDN2 trailer build. Recently acquired one through sheer luck and I have lots of plans for it. I've been I guess 'overlanding' since 2008. Never really saw it that way till it started gaining traction in N.Am. I don't particularly go offroading for sake of offroading and wheeling. Mostly I pick a destination that's hard to get to and camp out for a few days and then come back out the bush. That being said, I purchased a 2010 JKU X brand new. Ordered it as an upgrade from my TJ. Had it ever since and its evolved since. I have to say it's pretty neat to have witnessed the industry evolve as much as it did over the last decade. In any case, some photos of how it began and where I'm at. Currently i've been cleaning up my accessories with newer gen stuff like the upgrade Genesis and sPod. I've been just gutting everything and rewiring it all. I generally don't modify s*** unless I need it. That being said I wheel with open axles and stock TCase. I could use it, but so far I've been fine on the rocks and mud. Those items will come with time (and money ha). But for now, just fabricating and wheeling and enjoying time with the wife and pups out in the bush and crushing pints.
This was shortly after I purchased it. Just wanted a clean look. I think this might have been just a spacer lift. It lasted a month before I tossed it and went with a full AEV 3.5" SC kit.
This was a couple of years ago. Not much has changed since this picture other than I'm no longer running an RTT on top. Way too top heavy and it just doesn't work well offroading. I've since went with the AEV 4.5 HD springs and a rear 1" could spacers. Still have to add the .75 spacer to the front to level it better. But the Jeep just can't take extra weight unless I swap out the D44 to a 60 at least and dump a 5.7VVT. I mean, I don't help myself either with how much crap I have on it including an ARB 60L fridge freezer. Gotta keep the pints cold!
Picked up this little JK along the way too. Found it in Toronto for $8k from a used car dealer. 2007 got a bad rep and in a lot of cases justifiably so. But this little guy has a lot of soul and when I test drove it it showed. There were a few things needing fixing but all in all she is a solid machine. 270,000km on the odo and still going strong. Just like any machine, if you love it it'll love you back in kind. It was totally stock when I got it. Needed better boots for the winters out here and a lot of JL owners out in Toronto upgrading their JL's to 22" rims and street tires and selling K02's with rims for dirt cheap. I kept my coils from 2010 JKU which had a higher stiffness rating and gave the necessary lift to clear the tires and wheels. Also kept the JKU's shocks so it rides better and the correct height. OG's were pretty shot anyway. New steering stablizer helped the wobble 07's were notorious for and it's hardly present. I think the bigger rims help too.
I sold my 2017 RAM 2500 SLT because it was 6.4L. Ate way too much gas for what I used it for. I tried to use my little JK as a work truck hauling tools thinking stiffer suspension would help. And reinforced the heck out of the PA roof rack so all the weight is being held by the tub. Design worked out really well. But again, these guys just can't take extra weight and ounces make pounds.....and anytime I went out with my tools there ended being more ounces than it could do. So I said **** it and bought a 23' RAM 1500 Rebel G/T
. Trips were getting longer and my little family as well. Was no longer solo'ing it in the JKU plus the JKU gets really hot because in my youth a thought why the heck do I need an A/C in the jeep....I mean I still do, but the carpets have long disintegrated into the swamps and the transmission sure does make for a hot cabin for the pups and the wife. 0_0
