I recently replaced my carb with a new toyota carb hoping that it would correct an intermittent hesitation/surge problem that I have been having on my 85 FJ60I thought it was fuel system related, but I am thinking now that it may be an electrical issue. I will just be cruising along and all of a sudden you can feel a hesitation/surge and then back to cruising normally. It almost feels as if you were bumped from behind. I have replaced, carb, fuel filter (twice) and all hoses but it still does it. I was told to replace the temp sensor (near the CAT) and also to run the rig without the tach connected. Apparently, this is a common problem. Someone else suggested that it could be a loose ignition wire or the fusible link. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could cause this?

EGR valve.
There are some bucking and surging threads about the egr. You can bypass it. Search EGR bypass and give it a try.

If not that, I'd measure vacuum and make sure you don't have a leak.

X2. Plug port Q of your EGR modulator. It's the port opposite the paired ones with a hose that runs to the top of the EGR. You can leave the port on the EGR open for testing purposes. Then run it and see if you have the same symptoms.
