I don't have much experience cooking Indian food from scratch, but I'm going to try a recipe for Butter Chicken this week.

The recipe calls for "Tandoori Masala," but I couldn't find any at the grocery store. Can I substitute "Garam Masala"?

Dunno, but I can hook you up with a great "yatahey" frybread recipe..

I think garam masala has some, but not all of the ingredients in tandoori masala. I think it needs chili and garlic and a few other things--there are something like ten or fifteen ingredients in tandoori masala. Google it, find the ingredients, and add what you need to the garam masala to finish it off.

I may have seen the same butter chicken recipe the other day. I was considering making it as well.

As Jman states, garam masala has most of the ingredients of tandoori masala except for garlic, ginger, cumin and cayenne (got this info from wikipedia lookup of tandoori masala  )

let us know how it turns out

Yeah, it was on NPR. Here's the link - Kitchen Window -- Making Butter Chicken With Dad : NPR

I found a site that gave me recipes for making both Garam and Tandoori Masalas from scratch, so I was able cross reference the lists and determine roughly in what ratio to add the missing ingredients. If it turns out well, I'll let you know.
