I've been reading this site for a little while and am seriously looking for an 80-series LC.

I'm looking for one that is clean and fairly solid mechanically (and lockers?) for ~$5k. I've been looking at CL for about a month and looked at a few vehicles, but haven't found what I'm looking for yet. Am I looking for something that doesn't exist? I'm willing to wait if they come along every so often.

Thanks.

You will have a tough time finding one with lockers that is mechanically sound for 5K. I looked for a month or so in every part of country before purchasing mine last week. You will more than likely be able to find one in decent condition without lockers for that price, but it will probably have high miles.

If you have some time, I would say hold out for a good deal. Make sure to use the CL search utility in the classified section and don't forget to check Auto Trader and Ebay every couple of days. The right one will come around.

Good luck!

Mine may be for sale next year.If you wanna wait that long.

We've decided the 80 just wont cut it for our future plans that will include towing a decent size boat,a decent size camper and long distance comfort.

We just got back from a 700ish mile trip towing an 18ft camper that weighed about 3200lbs. Truck just struggled too much. Love the truck, love the capability but we want a 100 series.

I found the same issue pulling our 3100 lbs trailer with my old 80. Just a bit underpowered for towing. Especially on hills or mountains. The 100 series pulls so much better than the 80 and the AHC on the LX levels the ride when towing.

That being said, I can't bring myself to wheel the LX like I did the 80. I think the 80 is probably a better off road platform but I don't know by how much. For the kind of family wheeling I'm doing these days, the LX will do everything I need it to do and is mega comfortable.

Same thing I found out. 80 did fine with flats, tolerable on hills but got killed by headwinds. Whole way home was mosly 3rd gear struggling to run 60 due to a headwind combined with hills. The 80 is great offroad but for what we do at the farm and Hidden Falls the 100 is more than capable.

Love the 80 but family needs in the next couple years will make the 100 a better fit.

not without a good motor and a supercharger.

I think once the Zoo is ready to wheel we will trade in the Expedition for a diesel truck that can tow both the Jeep and the Zoo.

Thats the way to do it Jen. i know some folks back home that did that with flat deck goose neck trailers. They also used trailers long enough to hold one extra truck so if someone broke they could take the truck home for them.
