I finally got around to cleaning off the 2 inches or so ice from my driveway this afternoon. Took, I dunno a couple hours at least, but I figured I'd get 'er dun before this next snow storm rolls in (I hate winter in Kansas).

Spent two hours walking around the ice in the sloped driveway, not to mention the hour or so I worked on the 40 to get it out of the driveway to I could clear it, with not so much as a slip. So I get the drive cleared, backed the Big Blue Ford into the drive to get the hillbilly hotel offloaded, walked back down the now ice-free driveway to get 40 and park so I can go inside a take a nap before I had to go to work this evening.

I step one frig'n foot off the driveway onto the nearly flat but ice-packed street and, yep, you guessed it, fell flat on my back and smacked my head on the curb .... Knocked myself smack-out cold. We determined (much later) I laid in the street for about 20 to 30 minutes, out cold. I woke up to the sound of a trash truck on the next street over and a gray, blurry street light hanging over me. I managed to stumble into the house just to colapsed in a pile in the living room and got Debi's help.

So one ambulance ride, one arm sling, one CT scan, about a dozen x-rays, a bottle of Hydrocodone and six hours later I managed to get to walk (not stumble half concious) up my ice free driveway.... In my longjohns cause I made Debi and the EMT's take off my Carhart bibs and coat so the scissor happy ER nurses would lay claim to them.

I sure can't wait for the 4 to 6 inches of snow coming tomorrow.

I'd almost bet we can find room for ya' in the Lone Star State..........:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Sh*t!!! Dam good thing you have a hard head. I too am surprised that none of the neighbor kids saw you.

I am still floored that this stupid ass state and most of the towns do not plow the roads or neighborhoods. In that respect I miss the north east, they don't f%ck around with snow and ice.

I cleaned off our driveway Thursday and was thinking the same thing with the 2" of ice. Last thing I need is Wendy falling and smacking her head on the way to work, no one would notice here.

I hope you're feeling better. If Deb is still out of town this weekend and you need anything don't hesitate to give us a call.

Ok here's my .02, I've workd in the heavy equipment shop all my 28 years 10 months. There are 16 Techs that work in this shop. There are 5 of us on first shift today. There are 45 plow trucks, 5 are broke down right now. Might get 2 goin by robin parts from the others. We have had at least 11 others in the shop for various reasons today. One rig was run into by by a citizen. Haven't seen it yet. Hope it wasn't the spreader that got run into. There is still one spreader goin that got partly dumped out of the bed last weekend. Some of the plows are 17 years old now. Some of the spreaders as old and older than that. I started looking over the plows and spreaders in the main yard right after Labor Day. They were in bad bad shape. Some of the Fords are 92-93 model year. They plow and treat about 1700 miles as is. How do they do it back East?

I'm pretty sore today. Neck, hips and left shoulder.... not to mention a headache, but it could be worse.

The bad part is Debi didn't get to take her girls-weekend-away-from-men-and-kids so she could take care of my clumsy self, and I'm not getting the mini out of the garage.

Thanks for all the good wishes!!!

I think back east they attach plows to everything, garbage trucks, sewer trucks, everything and they spend the money to make sure they have enough trucks and plows to hit the side roads as well as the main roads.

In our little town we have one dump truck with a plow and spreader bought second hand from the county, two front-end loaders and a skid steer. The problem is the supervisor won't send them out to clean the streets and refuses to add salt to the sand in the spreader.

That ice shovelin is overrated, do what I do. Lock everyone inside (including myself) until it melts. Seriously glad yer ok.

17 year old snow plow equipment, Ahhh, reminders of the Knight/Cherches/Trail era. Those 3 ah***s screwed city employees out of wages, benefits, and equipment, while lining their pockets and taking care of their buddies. Those 3 are gone, but the price for their city managment continues. Good thing privatization got shot down for a year or two. We're going to pay the price in the long run for equipment replacement through higher taxes. They, (being Cherches and Trail) put off equipment replacement for the last 10-15 years. The only way to finance new equipment will be the result of higher taxes at some point.

Dang son! Hope the city doesn't make you pay for the damage to the curb. :D Seriously, glad you're on the mend.

Don't mind snow, but I hate the ice. Seems like we get more of that here every year. Wife slipped and fell on the front steps before I was able to get 'em cleaned off. Had cleared the driveway with the blade on the lawn tractor, but she went out the front instead of through the garage. Landed on her butt rather than her head and luckily didn't get hurt.

Those ice cleats for your shoes that Don mentioned sound like a good idea.

I realize that normal winters here don't have near the quantity of snow like we have back east so that may play a major part. The town I grew up in north of Albany, NY had half as many trucks but their plow setups were no joke, they have left and right fixed units with wings, full box spreaders and brine trucks. Prolly the biggest difference is they run 24 hours/day in shifts (3 IIRC) not this daytime only, no overtime stuff (what was said on the news after the last storm). It doesn't hurt that their trucks never get that old. I would hazard a guess the town trucks are no older than 8 years for the oldest units. The biggest surprise here in KS is not plowing all the roads. Back home they will plow each and every street, road and state road (NYDOT takes care of the highways).

If I had the space I'd buy my dad's Unimog and plow my own neighborhood just for the fun of it. Wendy however doesn't like Unis or the thought of her sitting in the driveway. Sometimes she has no appreciation for semi useless toys.

I think back east they attach plows to everything, garbage trucks, sewer trucks, everything and they spend the money to make sure they have enough trucks and plows to hit the side roads as well as the main roads.

Down in NYC they run plows on the garbage trucks which is a lot cheaper than a dedicated fleet of plow/dump trucks, the city owns the garbage trucks. Once you get out of the city it's up to the local towns. In both NYC and other large cities (Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, etc) they contend with street parking as well. One day after the storm it'll be odd side parking day then the next will be even to ensure the roads are totally clear. If you forget to move your car it gets towed, they don't f@*k around with snow removal.

They prolly do spend more $$$, because "normal" winter seasons usually have significant snowfall they do spend more on equipment to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Mike sorry for the hijack.

Ouch! Good thing you didn't get too cold.
